My rca truflat tv will get a black box pop up on the screen. It covers most of the picture. Sometimes there will be text in the box. If I adjust the volume it will disappear for a few seconds then come back. This only happens on some channels

It is a Text or Description box that operates like Closed Captions. Cycle through the options by pressing the Caption button on the remote or go to the Caption menu and turn it off.

Curing the "black box" on some TV channels

Here's the symptom: A mysterious black box covers some or most of the picture on your TV, but not all the time. It may not show up on all channels, or sometimes it disappears only to come back later.

No, it's not the picture tube, it's your closed-captioning. Somehow your TV has been set to "text mode", and the screen is being cleared for text that isn't there. On channels or shows where captions aren't being broadcast, there's no box. But the box returns when captioning is being sent.

Many TV set remote controls have a single button to set closed-caption modes, so it's easy to set a TV to "text" without knowing it. (Especially when you have kids who love to press buttons!) Then when the box pops up, it's a mystery.

Simply press the captioning button on the remote, or use the set's menu, to cycle through the settings until you turn captions off. No more box!

RCA Truflat tv picture quality is diminished, it is like the brightness is too low, but that is not the problem. We can turn the tv off and on and sometimes the clear picture will appear again

CRT sets use a special transformer called 'flyback.' This device has two, sometimes three adjustments on the transformer, one of these is a focus adjustment. All of these controls are variable resistors and these can develop internal contact problems at the 'wiper.' This problem can often be solved with some success by turning the control back and forth several (many) times to clean the contact area inside.
This is an area of high voltage but the adjustments are insulated so stray fingers may get a surprise so be careful if you try the following- - Pull AC plug from wall. - Remove the back cover; 6-8 screws, may be hex head or Phillips - In good light, look for a round peg-like control on a larger black device with a top cable running toward the side of the picture tube, with 'Focus' molded next to it or around it. - MARK the current position (correction fluid works well) - If you can identify the right control, turn it back and forth several times; most of these can be turned with a flat blade or a Phillips screwdriver. - Return it to its original position.
If the power cord can be separated and plugged into the set, turn it on and observe the picture; it may be worse than before but don't panic, you did move it. Best case is to have a mirror so you can watch the screen while not poking your screwdriver in the wrong place. This (focus) is not a potentially damaging adjustment, the other one (or two) can be since they may act on the high voltage level, focus does not. Adjust for the sharpest picture.
There are other defects which could cause this problem but the above is the most common and the others require technical background and a couple of pieces of test equipment.
If this resolves the problem, you may get many more years from your set instead of going 'flat/big screen' and being really ********** when it fails in a year or two.

I HAVE JUST BOUGHT A RCA 27 INCH TRUE FLAT TV AFTER HAVING IT FOR ABOUT 1 MONTH IT STARTS HAVING A BIG BLACK BOX ON THE SCREEN SO THAT YOU CAN NOT SEE THE PICTURE BUT YOU CAN CHANGE THE CHANNEL AND GET A...

Somehow you have enabled the Closed Captioning mode. Work your way through the menus to turn it off and the problem will be resolved. The channels that come in normally are not transmitting the closed captioning information, thus no CC black box.

Turning off Closed Captioning

On the 27" TruFlat the closed caption button is hidden within the DVD buttons. You have to press it multiple times to shut off closed caption. It seems to have multiple sources for closed captions. Press the button until no source appears on the screen. ITS CONTROLED AT THE REMOTE CONTROL - NOT ON THE ON-SCREEN TV MENUS. Good Luck

Black Box

i had the same problem with my rca truflat.. i read from a posting of a similar problem with a different tv brand to switch your closed caption options 'off' or set it to a 'cc' option instead of the 't' options.. (this was done through the on-screen menu..) i gave it a try and it worked for my tv.. hope it works for you..
