I have a Dewalt cordless 12v drill, 3speed model.
Unit is about 4 years old, lightly used.
Two battery packs in good condition.
Problem: With no load, I pull the trigger and the drill spins normally for a second then slows down quickly to a few RPM. Releasing the trigger and pulling the trigger has same result. Two things I noticed: 1, a fair amount of arching behind the motor. 2. Light wisp of smoke from back of motor.
A friends 12v Dewalt drill runs fine with my battery packs, so I know it has to be the drill. Doesn't matter what gear the drill is in either (1,2,or 3). Unit is clean, kept in storage case.
Help/ideas appreciated.
Sounds like your brushes are either damaged or the armature is failing the current. Remove the brushes first and inspect them, that is where your arcing is coming from. If the brushes appear ok, your problem is in the armature itself. Regardless of low use, if you store the unit with the battery attached, there are issues with the current draw while stored.

I took apart the drill and inspected the brushes, they seem fine and have plenty of material left.
the armature... is this the part the brushes rub against? It was fairly greasy, surface copper in color and a thin film of grey grease.
All the parts I could see didn't have any obvious signs of arcing.
I wiped the unit down, put it back together, same issue... arching, but not as bad.
Should I really clean out the electrical contact areas? (get all the grease out?)
thanks!
