    I already did

  • Anonymous Feb 13, 2008

I have the same problem on my 3 month old 5500 AIO. Tried 2 brand new black cartridges to no avail. From what I read on the web, the problem is in the printhead NOT the cartridge. From the number of complaints, it appears this product is fatally flawed and we've been screwed by Kodak!

  • Anonymous Mar 13, 2008

printer will not print black on photo paper, just get greys. It will print black on regular paper!?

Tried to clean the printhead with windex. Not working.

Tried to clean printheads with the basic clean and deep clean functions but only used up the ink. Still not working.

Next, I think, I will try the drop out of second story window function before I install yet another set of ink cartridges.

Kodak 5500 won't print anything in black removed and cleaned.

  • Anonymous Apr 03, 2008

I am having the same problem. I was on hold with Kodak support but could not wait for them to get back to me. I will have to call another day. I don't see how to get the print head out without bending the plastic up. I am thinking of just getting a new printer since there are so many problems with this one. I am glad that my search found this site so I can see that others have the same issue.

won't print black ink. prints one or two pages ok, then again the problem.

    everything the owner's manual suggested

  • jkohm Apr 15, 2008

Can anyone tell me where I can to buy a new printhead. I ckeck www.kodak.com and many other urls without any luck. thanks

  • Anonymous Apr 19, 2008

Same exact problem for me, only this is the second unit I've owned. I think pabslop has the right idea: I'm going to go find a second story window.

My Easyshare 5500 worked fine through two sets of ink cartridges, but now it will not print black ink at all. No error messages and color ink prints OK. Suspect a bad print head, but where do you find a new print head for the Easyshare 5500?

  • MYM5500 Jul 06, 2008

Well it seemed too good to be true! I also went trough various sets of ink cleaning the print head and...BLACK DOES NOT PRINT! So much for saving on ink, huh? E-mailed support center, 4th of July weekend...no one there. I'll call them on monday and see what's the story.

  • Anonymous Jul 09, 2008

my 5500 will print black on postcards but not on normal A4 paper, phoned kodak who say they will replace printhead so I will have to wait and see, cant understand why it can print on photo paper thou

  • Anonymous Jul 09, 2008

my printer will not print black on A4 paper buit it will on photos! it seems that it will outline anything but not fill in the wording and its very faint. have phoned kodak who are going to send a new printhead so I will have to wait and see.

Cleaned and deep cleaned printhead, done all updates , calibrated etc

  • Anonymous Jul 14, 2008

I had the same problem. Seem to me Kodak had a bad batch of printheads and they knew it. They sent me a new printhead AND new black and color cartridges (I was going to be upset about having to buy new ones since after running through all the cleaning/calibration cycles my color was empty) and a pack of photo paper.

They may have had a problem product, but that went a long way to fixing it.

We had the same problem and are very satisfied with Kodak's response. The tech we called was very helpful and the new print head arrived within a couple of days as promised. Replacement was a snap with the provided instructions and the printer now works great.

  • Anonymous Jul 20, 2008

will not print black ink at all.

  • andrewseaz Jul 29, 2008

Had the same problem. Kodak on it right away. Got new print head the next day and my problem is fixed. All I had to do after replacing parts was call DHL for pick up to send defective part back. Unforunately, I'm hoping this is not indicative of further problems. My printer is only 7 months old.

  • andrewseaz Jul 29, 2008

Had the same problem. Called Kodak and got a new print head in one day. Easy to install. Just hope thisis not signs of things to come since this printer is only 7 months old.

kodak 5300 all-in-one prints colors only . I replaced black cartrige but it still does not print black , i was told to clean the printer head. how?

  • Anonymous Aug 25, 2008

I am on the phone with Kodak tech right now. As was described by all, the tech was very nice and after some basic head cleaning steps took my address for a new print head as well as a color and a black cartridge. Thanks for the 1-800 421-6699 phone number. I will be up and running in a couple of days. Kodak EasyShare 5500 printer

  • josmi510 Oct 17, 2008

I have waisted 13 sheets of 8.5 x 11 paper trying fix this problem. The black is missing and the image has a grayish haze with a textured ink jet pattern. I followed the head cleaning process both basic and deep. I had been very pleased with this purchase and convinced others to purchase the 5500. This problem could not have happen a worse time. Very disappointed.

I have the same Kodak printer and the same problem; however, my scanner prints black, but all other documents and photos donot print black. Would this still be a printer head problem? Kodak told me it was a computer problem and Gateway told me it was a printer problem. I just want to be able to print black again !!! Help!!! Anita from Texas

  • Anonymous Nov 12, 2008

I've had this problem twice.  After making sure the drivers and firmware was up-to-date I called Kodak and again was told that the printhead needed replacing.  My conversation with Kodak was Sunday Evening and the "free" replacement arrived Tuesday noon and included new black and color ink.

I'm grateful for the service but I'm concerned that when the problem occurs again I'll be past the one year period and the rep avoided my questions on future cost.  The printhead problem appears to be one you can expect to encounter frequently.   Otherwise its a great machine.   I'm keeping my fingers crossed!  bob

  • Anonymous Nov 13, 2008

This has happened to me twice (stopped printing black ink). The first time they sent me out a new printhead with ink, and it worked for a few months.

I spoke to the Kodak support person today and he said they have redesigned the printhead and "hopefully it has permanantly fixed the problem." Guess I'll have to wait and see.

  • Anonymous Nov 14, 2008

No black print, but Kodak easily sent a replacement. When asked about future print heads, the tech indicated that Kodak would be "opening" up the sales in the future.

  • jbrooks857 Nov 15, 2008

I have the same thing, new print head in July and now no black again

  • Anonymous Nov 24, 2008

My Kodak also will not print any black. I have removed cleaned and replaced the print head, but still no luck. Need to find out where to purchase a new print head...

1800 421 6699 and talked to Kodak customer support and they are sending a new printhead (still cannot buy one) but no ink. Hope this one lasts longer than 9 months!

MY PRINTER WILL NOT PRINT ANYTHING WITH BLACK INK. THIS IS A GREAT PROBLEM. KODAK 5500

  • diet_del_sol Jan 14, 2009

Just received a 5500 [un]easyshare that won't print black. Ironic, but free. I felt the need to express my mild relief that some others have the same problem. I will begin the hunt for a proper repair today.

  • Anonymous Feb 02, 2009

I've been dealing with poor quality for a long time until I called the 800 number....and got a different printhead sent to me (w/o ink). Installed prinhead, have use 3/4's of my black ink and it's already reverting back to the old ways. This 5300 printer is a major frustration. Caveat Emptor to all looking at buying one.

  • thekingholme Feb 12, 2009

I had the same issues with no red. I called Kodak and they had me go through all the things I had previously tested. They sent out a new one and it works great.

  • Anonymous Feb 12, 2009

This is the second time I've encountered this problem: we had a power
failure, prior to which the EasyShare 5500 was printing fine, and after
which no black would print. This time I checked their online
diagnostic tool at the Kodak website, ran through all the diagnostic
stuff (calibrating, removing and re-seating cartridges and print head,
printing demo sheets, etc), then called the toll-free number noted
elsewhere: 1-800-421-6699. They ran me through the same diagnostics,
nothing was resolved, and now there's a message flashing saying black
and colour cartridges both need changing, and I can't print at all.

Kodak is sending a new print head, but not cartridges as they did
before. I'm not sure if that's because they've already replaced mine
once before, but remember the last time (less than a year ago) the
package came pretty fast so hopefully I won't have long to wait.

  • xjeans Feb 17, 2009

Mine is printing blank pages, but the 800 # I got here Helped BIG time!
I called it and they are shipping me a new printer. All I have to do is ship my old one back with the prepaid label they send with the new unit. So big thanks for the phone #

  • Anonymous Mar 15, 2009

Worked OK for about a year, then black dies - Changing Ink cartridge doesn't help. Fax report prints OK with clear black lettering. Printer software is flakey.

Go here:

http://www.kodak.com/go/aiotroubleshooting

Within the tool, select Print quality, then No black, missing text, or text quality.

After answering all the questions (assuming you haven't abused your printhead) you will be prompted to enter a service number, name, and address to be mailed a replacement printhead.

I just went through this and was told my printhead would arrive in 2 to 5 business days.

Inkjet printers nozzles can dry out and get clogged. If the units printhead cleaning does not work you can remove the printhead and manually clean it. There are many ways to do this just be careful and do some research online. My personal method for cleaning any inkjet printhead is to use distilled or de-ionized water (i hear windex works as well). You can soak the printhead nozzles or you can use a Lint-free cloth. Wet the cloth and wipe the printhead nozzles from front to back or back to front following the grain of the nozzle lines you see on the printhead. do not use a circular motion or wipe left to right across the nozzles. Also be sure to update your Firmware to the latest version from the kodak site. Just incase there was a problem in the code that wasnt completely capping the printhead when its idle. If it never recovers you can contact kodak and see about getting a new printhead.

Hope this helps and goodluck!

SURPRISE...SURPRISE...THE JOKE IS ON THE KODAK CUSTOMER...
CHANGING THE PRINT PREFERENCE TO PRINT IN BLACK AND WHITE ONLY DOES NOT WORK BECAUSE YOU CAN NOT PRINT AT ALL IF THE COLOR CARTRIDGE IS EMPTY.
THANKS KODAK FOR NOT MENTIONING THIS INSIGNIFICANT LITTLE FACT WHEN YOU ARE ADVERTISING CHEAP INK PRICES AS A REASON TO BUY YOUR PRINTERS....
YOU HAVE TO BUY COLOR AND BLACK AND KEEP BOTH INSTALLED IN THE PRINTER TO PRINT ANYTHING AT ALL.....
SCREW YOU KODAK...NEVER AGAIN.

I have the same problem with my Kodak 5300. It appears that Kodak is happy to "run out the clock" on the warranty with free replacement printheads, NEVER ADDRESSING the native problem.
The only solution I can offer everyone here is never to buy another product from Kodak. They DESERVE to be put out of business.

To be honest this will probably be my last print head with this manufacturer, their support people are nice but the printers go wrong too often. I am having to pay for a new print head and this will be my third head. I will no longer buy any kodak products after this. Not to mention the amount of ink wasted diagnosing the problem in the first place.

DON'T BUY **** OF KODAK I WAS PRETTY HAPPY FOR A COUPLE MONTHS AND THEN THE BLACK WAS NOT PRINTING TO THE PAPER AND WHEN I ASKED KODAK TO HELP THEY SAID IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE RECIET THEN WE CAN HELP YOU WITH NON WARANTY ITEMS..... IN OTHER WORDS I AM S.O.L. WHAT A BUNCH OF CRUD! I WAS OFFERED A PRINTHEAD FOR $30 AND THEN INK FOR ANOTHER 30 PLUS SHIPPING AND HANDLING..... WHY DON'T THEY HAVE LOCAL RETAILERS SELLING THIS STUFF?.... I KNOW WHY SO NO RETAILERS HAVE TO EXPLAIN HOW CRAPPY THE KODAK PRODUCTS AER. I CAN'T EVEN FIND THE INK FOR THE PRINTER ANYMORE AND THE REASON THE STORE TOLD ME IS BECAUSE THEY GOT TO BE BOUGHT DIRECTLY FROM **** OF KODAK. I HAVE TO AGREE THAT THIS IS JUST ANOTHER WAY TO MAKE THE CUSTOMER SPEND MORE AND TAKE AWAY FROM THE LOCAL RETAILERS. i WILL NEVER EVER USE ANOTHER KODAK PRODUCT IN MY LIFE DO TO THE CUSTOMER SERVICE ISSUES AND THE ONGOING PRICE GOUGING OF INK AND ACCESORIES. I REALLY HOPE THEY FIX THESE PROBLEMS OR GET OUT OF THE PRINTER MARKET ALL TOGETHER!!!!! BUT TO HAVE THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REP TELL ME THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO TO HELP WITH MY WARANTY WHEN I GOT THIS THING RIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS AS A CHRISTMAS GIFT, IS JUST ****. HAVE A GOOD DAY!!! AND STAY AWAY FROM KODAK!!!!!!

I bought a 5300 all in one Kodak printer a few years ago from the Kodak tent @ the Ohio State Fair. Needless to say it worked fine for about six months...went thru the drill with Kodak support. They over nighted me a new print head and ink cartridges. Thought I was good to go...a few months later same thing printing nothing but lines...Called them again...since its still within the year..they sent me another print head, guarnteed this is the updated version and will last. And it did for 2 yrs! Now out of warranty, I called them back, they said sorry couldn't help me since it was out of warranty. But..I could buy a new print head for 25 bux! I told them, for what? So I could keep buying print heads?
I asked for a deal on a new printer, they're sending me a coupon for a new 5250 wifi all in one printer for 90 bux! Now I'm wondering if the new printers are using the same print heads? I know the 5300 & 5500 series and ESP series are the same print heads. Wondering if the new 5250 ae still using the same print heads. HOPE NOT! :(

I couldn't find a solution and I think the best thing to do is send it back before the warranty runs out. I had the printhead replaced 3 times and each time I replaced the ink black or color my pictures would start printing with lines then would eventually turn into negative type pictures. Kodak replaced it until they said my warranty was up and then offered to give me a 30% coupon to help cover the purchase of a new printer. I was told the printheads would now cost me $70.00, so all the "so called" money I was saving on ink is going to have to go towards an new printer. The ink on the photos does last much longer than my other printer so now I've got to figure out what I'll do next. Good luck

I just got off the phone with support and they are sending me a new print head, as well.
5100 will not print any "yellow"...have great blacks...they are sending new print head and I should have it in 1 - 2 days they said.
Printhead on 5100 is easy to pull out.  Remove ink and there is a tab at the top/back of the head. Push that in until you hear the carriage pop loose and it will come right out.

  • SgtTiminator Jun 13, 2008

    Hey everyone,

If Kodak keeps support in place like I got...I'll keep buying their printers.

I posted a couple days ago and the new print head...with two ink cartridges and a pack of photo paper was sitting on my door step yesterday.

I am impressed with the service and the printer...I just hate that I had a problem with it.

    Keep you posted

Kodak 5100 won't print any black ink, and I also found out like the others that the maintenance button just sucks your ink dry and then the 5100 locks up until you get back from walmart with a receipt and new ink cartridges, called 1-800-421-6699 for support and now have a free head on the way, and from all the complaints people have made it will probably just be a temporary fix if any, unlike other printers which come with a new head on every expensive cartridge? Maybe this is a fix! Rob

I have the exact same problem. Cleaning printhead and replacing ink doesn't work. Looks like I will be trying to replace the printhead. Thanks for the posts!

Yes. To replace the print head, take out both ink cartridges. Then look at the upper left side of the "black box". You will see that it is different than the other side. There is a "button". The button is underneath the lip and it needs to be pushed "up", not in. Then the middle of the black box will become loose and you wriggle it out while holding the button up.

My Kodak EasyShare 5100 won't print any black. The kid's home work is due tomorrow so they have to change to another color print. I called kodak support and they are going to send me a new printhead but it may take three days to get here. I wasted a set of ink just for cleaning the bad printhead.

Try returning it because Kodak discontinued the whole 5xxx series because of all the problems those printers had.

Hi,

follow the step by step solution from kodak.

Choose All-in-one printer and then Print quality and follow the further steps. I think it's a problem with your printhead.

Check your settings in the print window that comes up when you start a print job. You probably have "Print colors as black" selected. Unselect it.
