I think you might be confused about the upconversion of the LG player. The dvd player in the LG machine will make a regular DVD look near HD quality, but only if you have an HD TV, otherwise you really don't have access to that feature. You should get rid of your HD DVD's anyway as blue ray won out in the high def dvd competition. If you end up buying a blue ray player for the high def dvd's you will still need an HD TV to view it.

If this is just a regular DVD player, then no. You need an HD DVD player to play HD DVD discs. Now the HD DVD players should play regular DVD discs.

Mine wont play anything a DVD it recorded it wont let me finalize

Today with HD High Definition TV these kind of problems appears because the new dvd players have more video resolution options, so, for playing all variety of dvd, and home done dvs,s (like family movies on dvd) you need set up your resolution video on your DVD player at 480i or 480p option, not higher because some DVD movies (mainly oldies) have lower resolution than newer , for example new movies on HD format have 1080 P resolution, and if you have this option chosen in your DVD player you only can see this kind of videos, on the other hand if you have chosen 480i or 480 p on your dvd player , you can play all dvd formats including home movies made with any movie software, in this way you can play dvd-r and +r movies and of cours you can play HD movies also. So put some dvd where your dvd player works well (you need see the dvd menu in the tv screen), then press stop. Then press setup in your remote control, go to video resolution and choose 480 I or 480p, then press ok AND ENJOY THE MOVIE.

HD DVD versus Blu Ray Disc

At the beginning of the year, Toshiba announced that it was dropping production of HD DVD drives. Warner Bros. then announced that it would not produce more movies on HD DVD, and the rest have basically followed, generally noting the demise of the ongoing "battle" between HD & Blu-Ray.

The word I got back in the first quarter was that while HD players that were already out there would continue to play the existing movies, but that new movies should be expected to come out only on Blu-Ray. It is very much like the long-ago battle between VHS & Beta on videotape formats.

It is not good news for those who purchased HD drives / players, but obviously there is no way for the consumer to affect this movement. As for movies that were exclusively produced on HD DVD, the decision as to reproduction on Blu-Ray will obviously be another uncontrollable decision made by the responsible corporation. It will likely depend on the perceived level of consumer demand for each individual product, and whether they think that enough people will purchase another copy (probably even more costly) of the same movie.

On the other hand, if you have HD DVD movies and a player, they should continue to play for you just as they have from the beginning. But when they inevitably stop, break, wear out, etc., it will mean Blu-Ray replacement if you still desire that type of content. If you have a relatively recent purchase, most of the retailers have some type of policy for return/replacement following the announcement of the discontinuation of HD DVD. Others, particularly drive manufacturers, have stated that they will support the drives through the published warranty periods (and some may even be gracious enough to extend them), but that further updates/upgrades will not be made. It might be worthwhile for you to check this out if you want to pursue potential reimbursement or other action.

HD movie player

Greetings moseracc,

If the box sets are HD DVD, then you will need an HD DVD player for them play on. Some stores may still carry players in this format however a few months ago, the switch in the industry was made to the Blu-Ray format.

I hope this helps!

Thank you,

Dorothy

Hd dvd

As a general rule, Blu-ray and HD do not mix, unless you have a dual format player. That said, I will assume that you are using AT Least one of these newer format players. A standard player will not play either of the higher definition format discs...accordianman

Im unable to play HD DVD on my philips HTS8100 home theatre system

As far as I can see your philips dvd player is not a HD-DVD player.
It just upscales standard dvd or digital content to HD ready televisions.
