Yes, you can manually clean the printhead. I can't provide step by step instructions, but the print head is the piece that your ink cartridges go into. There is probably a lever that holds it locaked into place. You will want to take out the ink, then open the lever and remove the print head. Then clean where the ink cartridges sit, then gently clean any coppor contacts you see and then clean the print nozzles on the bottom of the print head. Do all of this with distilled water. Dry completely and re-install along with your ink.
If this doesn't solve the issue, you can buy replacement print heads.

The problem with this machine is that you need to take off the top tilting cover, then remove several screws to take off the lower top cover. The print head is then visible. If you don't have experience, I wouldn't recommend it. You can ship it to me if you like. We are a Brother service center for 18 years. I'm in CT.

Yes, you can cut a small piece of electrical tape and place it over the window on the inside edge of the cartridge. it has to wrap around the window tightly.
