The feed dogs are what pushes on the material from underneath. perhaps they have been lowered ? You do that for free hand or embroidery work,
look for a lever at the back, behind the bobbin area. That's where they are in the janome, which is related to the kenmore somehow; good luck

I have a kenmore 385.19110600 sewing machine...my machine seems to be sewing correctly until I try to sew very fine lightweight fabric. I get a "birdsnest" on the bottom portion of fabric. Why?

Most likely it is the top thread not pulling back sufficiently by the take up arm. This is controlled by top thread tension. Try increasing tension.

Test the tension mechanism by making a slow steady pull of top thread with foot up, then foot down. Note differrence between no tension (foot up) to selected tension (foot down).

Advance problem.

your foot pressure is too high.
lower the pressure as mentioned in your manual and you should be alright

I caN'T ADJUST THE TENSION ON MY 1975 KENMORE SEWING MACHINE

Could be the tension disks are coated with gunk or pieces of thread. You can use UNwaxed dental floss and pull it DOWN through the tension disk a couple of times, or put a piece of pearl cotton in rubbing alcohol, squeeze out the excess, and pull it DOWN through the tension disk a couple times.

When threading, ALWAYS raise the presser foot so the thread will seat completely in the tension disk.

Older Kenmore sewing machine stops due to threads bunched

Mary, just re-thread the upper and make sure the threaded is seated between the tension disc

SEWING MACHINE WILL NOT STITCH ON TOP OR BOTTOM. EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE THREADED CORRECTLY AND NEEDLE HAS BEEN REPLACED.

Always thread a sewing machine with the presser foot up - this will make sure the tension feature has control of the top thead.

Make sure the needle is properly placed - usually with the flat side toward the back of the machine.

Thread keeps coming unthreaded in the machine

the green thread needs to go under the brown thread between the clip and the brown needle. I had this problem too.
