I have two DL2700 Series Digital Locks and one of them has 5 slots to change the battery the other has a white plastic box screwed in by 4 screws and the 5 battries are inside. In both cases when i get the battery low signal I replace battries quickly.
When the lock start giving the signal at unlocking time (red light after green light plus some extra beeps) you need to change the battries.
If you change battries within 5min you wont lose the programming. The plastic sleeve did throw me off a bit but its easy to unscrew it and put new battries inside.
There's no sure way to know when to change the batteries. I'd suggest you change them at least once a year. Plan on it when you do your smoke alarm battery change, which should be done at least annually.
