I just heard a loud sound, and when I looked at my receiver the word "Protect" was displayed on the screen. My manual does not address this so I turned it off. Can you help?

I have had this problem where the unit goes into PROTECT mode. This is typically caused by the relays and perhaps some other components developing dry joints over time. I had a professional refresh the solder joints and it works perfectly now

It needs repair probably output transistors and resistors. Est $100-$120 for parts and labor.

I have a Sony STR-DE 597 reciever. I have been using it fine for a few years with no problems and it sounded great. I turn the unit on recently and a message was displayed on the unit that said PROTECT....

Protect will usually show up if the receiver was turned up too loud to the point where the speakers will crackle, the receiver will switch to protect to not damage anything. Unplug it for about 30 seconds and check all the audio wiring in the back to make sure everything is plugged in good and tight and no loose cables or stray pieces of copper audio wire and plug it back in.

When playing dvd or or on video 3 playing a directv movie. Receiver keeps shutting off and the screen says protect. Seems to do it when the movie scene gets loud.

check your wires if there not touching behind the speakers and receiver. when it says protect this means something is shorting out or crossing over. one other thing it may be is if a speaker is starting to go bad. (please rate)

Flashing protect

the protector comes on to keep the amp from further damaging itself or the speakers. The buzz you heard was probably 60HZ line buzz from the main DC supply conducting full current through one of your speakers through a damaged amplifier transistor. Your stereo will need professional repair. The protect circuit basically opens the speaker relay (and sometimes shuts down the unit) to prevent this DC voltage and current from getting to your speakers until the problem is corrected.

Cuts off and displays "Protect"

The protect light comes on when the amp cuts off the speakers to protect them from damage if something's wrong in the amp, or to protect the amp from speaker or wiring problems. If the amp plays for a while before cutting off, it's probably a thermal problem in the output stages. One of the output devices may be acting up as it heats up, or it could be bad connections that open up because of the heat. The trouble might also be caused by components in the power supply as well. Without having the unit on the service bench to check it, it's not possible to suggest specific things to look at. The manual wouldn't help you other than to say check your speaker connections and then have it serviced. The best thing to do if you want to keep this is to find a servicer in your area and get an estimate for the repair. Or if you or a friend is technically inclined, look into purchasing a service manual and see if you can do-it-yourself.

Heard a loud

Sounds like it could be your power supply board. Same kind of issue i had. Try unplugging your tv completely for an hour.

PROTECT DISPLAYED ON RECEIVER

This generally means you've got a short somewhere, and the received is trying to protect itself.

My suggestion is to disconnect all of your speakers at both ends, and reconnect them.

Most times this happens because a speaker wire is lose, and the positive and negative connections are touching each other, causing it to short out.

Receiver shuts off abruptly when loud sounds are heard.

Are they new speakers you are using? some receivers have a overload seting so you don't mess up or blow anything, sometimes this can interfear with your music, etc..

Protect keeps flashing

there is a similar problem to yours on here. also, does it take a minute to go into protect or does it happen almost immediately? i'd unplug all your speakers from the back of the receiver and turn it on, if it still goes into protect it sounds like an internal problem which has been addressed. look at this for internal problems; http://www.fixya.com/support/t245043-teac_stereo_receiver_model_agv8520
