am3+ socket is what the socket is listed on the motherboard, so if you have a CPU that fits only AM3+, the CPU wont fit it unless directed by the CPU manufacture seeing that AM3+ is for AMD processors only if you have a older AM3 CPU it might fit the AM3+ motherboard if listed, this paticular model only lists AM3 and fits Sempron, Phenom II X3, Athlon II X2, Phenom II X2, Athlon II X4, Athlon II X3, Phenom II X4, Phenom II X6
your model 1630 is listed as with AMD Phenom ii processor and DDR3 memory on asus web site. if thats true (you typed its Athlon?) then it should be AM3 socket.
The
motherboard supports AMD socket AM2 single-core Athlon 64/ Sempron and
dual-core Athlon 64 X2/ Athlon 64 FX processors with 2MB / 1MB / 512KB
L2 cache, which is based on 64-bit architecture. It features 2000 / 1600
MT/s Hyper Transport Bus, dual-channel un-buffered DDR2 800 memory
support and AMD Cool 'n' Quiet! Technology.
The BIOS changes it on it's own when add a dual core.
Here is the PDF file on this board. Chapter 2 explains the Bios.
What we really need to know is the socket type for the AMD. AMD makes sockets 939, AM, AM2, AM2+, AM3, etc. www.newegg.com will be the best friend you could ask for. I highly suggest their expert forums and chats as well, they'll help if someone here doesn't. But either way still need to know what socket that amd is. 5200, or 4200 or something like that is also more descriptive, thats how they ID their products. Mine is an AMD phenom II 920. Good proc.
