My washing machine is an old whirlpool model.
The machine has been leaving light grey streaks across variousclothes, sheets and towels. I have no idea what is wrong - it could be the machine orthe old pipes since it is a house from the 1920s.
I had the plumber come and change the pipes and the rusted leaking tap today but I suspect something in the washing machine will need changing and that the problem is somewhere within the machine since the stains are grey/maybe oil stains?

Hmmm..let's see..sounds like you have some residue accumulating from something possibly seeping into the tub. That can be old rubber, a metal sheath, or even an leak of lubricant. Like an old car, there are parts of every mechanical device that need to be attended to.
I'd recommend you find the most seasoned person that works on older machines, to come by and assess what is 'leaking' on your clothing. Grey comes from something metallic or rubber/plastic.
Hope you can solve this one, and keep that old machine happy.

I have a similar problem, intermittently, especially showing on the whites. My machine (front loader) is only about 2 years old and our pipes are newer copper, so I think it's my rubber gasket. I suspect the part exposed to the inside of the machine needs a wipe down- the streaks strike me as a gray slime. They're almost like random thick pencil markings and very frustrating- hard to get cleaned off, near impossible if they go in the dryer undetected and are set by the heat.
