The C310 will accept SD cards up to 2GB in size and SDHC cards up to 32 GB. 1GB SD cards are getting hard to find, but 2GB cards should work just as well.
SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.
You haven't said which card you're trying to use but the symptoms are typical of those encountered if you try either a larger capacity SD card (which go to 4GB maximum) or if you're trying to use a later SDHC (the HC means High Capacity) card. The c310 was designed and manufactured before SDHC cards were manufactured and is incompatible at the basic hardware level. SDHC's will fit inside as they have the same form as SD cards, but your camera is unable to use them.
If you have tried using the wrong card then all you need to do to fix the error is to replace it with a standard SD card not exceeding 2GB. In practice you'll find that your camera may have issues with some brands/models of 2GB SD cards but that it will work fine with any make or model of 1GB SD card. The smaller capacity card will also ensure that your camera does not become awkwardly slow in operation.

Hi there Check to make sure the cards write protect is
off, take the card out of the camera, face the card towards you, look
for a small white tab on
the left hand side of the card, to unlock it push the tab down, it will
be at the side of the card like this . Put it back in the camera and use the menu to format the card. If the format fails then its a possibility that you will need a new card.
