We have a new Toshiba D-VR650KU DVD/VCR combo unit, attached to the coax cable from our air antenna (not a cable to satellite box). It's supposed to have NTSC, ATSC, and QAM tuners. But when the unit scans for channels it only finds analog channels...no digital channels!
One possible problem is during auto-scan for channels: We're supposed to be able to select "Cable" or "TV" as the tuning mode for the auto-scan...but this thing doesn't show "TV" as an available tuning mode, only "Cable". (I don't know what they mean by "tuning mode" anyway, and the book doesn't say.)
Note that our TV picks up about 11 digital channels through this same antenna setup--so we know we have good digital signals here. Is there anything we can do to get the D-VR650KU to "see" digital channels?

On the Notification screen with Cable highlighted I found that left clicking on Cable gave a drop down menu with TV on it for selection. The manual says that while Cable is highlighted, use the up or down arrows to get TV to be an option and then select it and Yes and enter. Hope this helps. I have other problems with my monitor on Line Out, the screen oftens turns blue indicating low or no video using Line 1 or 2 inputs.

alot of DVD/VHS combos have a built in RF modulator. Look for a coax (screw threads) output on the unit and it should be labeld either DVD/VHS OUT or just VHS OUT. If it does not have a combo out then you will need to use the seperate RF modulator.
Your combo unit should have a set of yellow red and white jacks that are labeled DVD & VHS OUT. Connect these yellow red and white to the yellow red and white on your RF modulator, then connect the coax (screw threads) out on the RF modulator to the coax jack on the back of your TV. There is also typically a swich for channel 3 or 4 on the RF Modulator, make sure you TV is on which ever channel you have that switch set to. If your RF modulator has a power light on it, it will usually not come on until your DVD/VHS is sending a signal through it and it is connected properly.
If you have an antenna or cable box, your RF moudulator should have an Antenna or Cable input jack on it that you can use.
If I understand your request right, You do not have cable or satellite box.
You can not record from your TV. You use the TV as a monitor from the dvd/vcr combo box. What the box receives is what shows on the TV. So you will have to have a digital convertor hooked to the (antenna in) dvd/vcr combo box, (antenna out to the tv antenna in) Depending on the antenna you are using that is on the other end of your cable-in coax connection this will hook to your antenna in on the digital convertor box. If your cable is hooked up and operating correctly and directly to the tv that is digital ready you probabbly have a good picture. When the vhf/uhf signal was transmitted you could go from the dvd/vcr to the tv with no problem. But now that the signal is digital and the tv is set for digital the dvd/vcr will not pass a digital signal to the tv. Best suggestion, you have to get a digital dvd/vcr receiver. You will have to split the signal before it goes into the digital box. The digital box is not allowing the analog signal to go to your vcr so you will only be able to record what you are watching on the cable box (on channel 4). If you split it, you will get all your analog channels back on your VCR (the way it was before the box was added).
If you are connecting the dvd/vcr combo to the tv with coax cable first make sure the tv is on channel 3 and also make sure you have the samsung dvd/vcr combo on channel 3 by using the remote that came with the samsung. You should get picture and sound then if not try channel 4 on tv instead of channel 3. If that doesn't work try to put the samsung on channel 4 as a last option to try. This is only recommended if the combo is hooked to tv with coax cable out of combo to in on tv. Make sure coax is plugged into the out jack on combo and in on tv.
If you have a yellow/white jack on your DVD/VCR unit you can connect it to the TV using composite cables. If you only have the coax output on the DVD player you can buy an RF modulator that will convert the coax to composite also. But if you have two ports on thhe DVD player as most combos do the top is usually an input source such as cable and the bottom is the output that goes to the back of the tv. You could also buy a "splitter" and attach the cable and dvd coaxs to each of the out ports(they will be side by side) and on the opposite end, which is the in run a coax from that port to the tv coax port.

The proper hookup is antenna or cable into the VCR RF/antenna input, then VCR RF/antenna output to the TV RF input. The hookup you describe means no signal is getting to the VCR.
With some TVs, there can be Video and audio output jacks which can be hooked to the video and audio jacks of the VCR. However this would likely mean you could only record the channel being watched, and, the TV would have to be on.
The easiest way to connect the unit is via coax. You can come out of your satellite receiver via the "Out to TV" on the back of the receiver to the "In from Ant" on your DVD/VCR combo. You can then connect another coax from the "Out to TV" on the DVD/VCR combo to the "Ant/Cable" input on the back of you TV. Make sure the satellite receiver and the vcr are both modulated to the same channel, normally channel 3.
I talked to some very nice people at tech support 1-866-583-7353 and found out that my satellite reciever must be set to 480i, which of course is a pain since like I wanted High Definition. The composite a/v cables (red, white,yellow) are not high def and are part of the reason. I have TiVo and when recording a movie from TiVo to the DVD it states there as well to set the reciever at 480i. Once I did this I was able to record from the Sat to the DVD. I did a quick review and I couldn't find a combo set or just a dvd recorder that has component video cable (red,blue,green) or HDMI inputs at all, I'm thinking that all would have to be recorded at 480i.
If you are able to you can connect to the RF connector (F Type Conncetor) on the TV. This should work.
The layout is from the VCR (RF to TV) to the TV antenna F type connector from your Cable box to the Antenna in of the VCR that way you have cable through the VCR, and access to you VCR and DVD all controlled by the Cable and VCR remotes (set TV to Channel 3, set VCR to Channel 3) and use the Cable box as the tuner, Use the TV remote to switch between Cable and VCR inputs then use the VCR remote to switch between the VCR and DVD input.
