Some new codecs in AVI invented in later years, such as Xvid, DivX, DX50, MP4V, and MPEG-4 cannot be supported by Windows Media Player since it has not been updated. To play the avi files. you can try to options.
1. You can download a different media player which is VLC media player. It plays almost all kinds of video format.
2. Download K-lite codec and run it and you should be able to play .avi files in media player.
