It is important to note that I have a Onkyo HT-S5200 system, not the 5100 listed below. The 5200 option was not listed here. I have my cable tv box plugged into the home theater system via the HDMI in slot. I then connected the system to my tv via the HDMI out slot. Picture is wonderful, sound works on tv. No sound through surround sound. Only when I plug in the av cables from box to surround sound system can I hear the sound through my surround sound system. This wouldn't be a problem except that I have a PS3 as well and you have to select one or the other for output mode on the PS3. In other words you have to select HDMI or AV cables for your output for both audio and video. With this system it appears as though I will need to use video via the HDMI cables so I can get HD quality, but will also need the av cables for audio in order to use my surround sound system. This is quite distressing because I was hoping to have both high quality sound and high quality video, thats why I purchased a nice tv and spent over $400 on this surround sound system. While I realize you can spend alot more than that on a surround sound system, that is still a substantial amount for me and I would like it to work. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. If I cant work this out I'm sending the thing back. Thanks in advance.
Sincerely,
Nick Dorrough
You need to assign the HDMI input(s) to the functions they represent, using the Front Panel Tuning/Preset control...
If you connect a video component to an HDMI input, you must assign that HDMI Input to an input selector in Setup.
For example, you could assign the “DVD” setting to “IN1”, and assign the
“CBL/SAT” setting to “IN2”.
Likewise if you use digital audio inputs...
Assigning the Digital Input
If there’s no sound, press the [DIGITAL INPUT] button repeatedly until sound is heard. The digital input is now properly assigned.
If you connect your DVD player to the AV receiver’s COAXIAL 1 DIGITAL IN, and your cable/satellite receiver
to the COAXIAL 2 DIGITAL IN, as shown, it’s not necessary
to assign the digital input.
