There are a few different "default" codes that you can try.
0000 or 1111 or 1234 or 9876 etc.
Here is something that i just came across, I do not know if it will work but it maybe worth a try:
1. Turn the DVD player on with No Disc in.
2. Press MENU on the remote (Ignore the 'NO' symbol that appears)
3. With the remote, press 1, then press 9 (Ignore the 'NO' symbol that appears)
4. A menu should appear.
5. Use the Down Arrow to highlight the PARENTAL CC then press ENTER.
Now type the Parental Control setting you want with the remote (8 is
the highest setting, press 8 on the remote for a fully unlocked
player). Then press ENTER on the remote after entering your new
setting.
6. Use the Down Arrow to highlight the PARENTAL PW. If you wnat to
change this, press ENTER. You can enter any 4-digit code here. Press
ENTER on the remote after you enter the 4-digit code.
7. To exit the menu and save your settings and push OPEN/CLOSE with the remote.
Same problems with my unit. But, try this... I think it worked. First, you can not get to the setup screen for the unit with a DVD in the player. So, remove the DVD first: Unplug the unit, wait a few seconds, plug it back in. Then hit the DVD open button and remove DVD in player.
I think the issue with not reading certain DVDs is a problem with the "parental control" on the unit. Without setting parental control there were a few DVDs I could not play and sometimes (not always) I was asked about parental control before a movie would play. At the Sony Blue DVD screen, select Setup on the remote control. Select DVD setup and get to Parental control. Set a password. This will then take you to a "rating" screen. By setting the rating very high (I set mine for #8) any movie should play without needing the password. With no password set, you can not change the "rating" and hence mine was set at #1 (kids). It seems to have worked for now anyway. Good luck.
