Magellan Explorist 500 LE Power

While trying install new battery and charger, unit won't power up anymore. Tried USB cable, AAA battery pack and Li ion battery, still nothing. Does anyone know where diagrams can be found.

EXplorist units have also some hidden and service functions. Like, if unit is off, you can to press:

- IN + PWR - to full selftest of unit (screen test, keypad test, NMEA test)
- OUT + PWR - to serial port test
- ESC + PWR - to burn-in process
- LIGHT + ENTER + RWR - tp uploading of new firmware
- NAV + PWR - to call Service Function window (see below)
- NAV + MENU + PWR - to force power off, equal remove batteries.
- GOTO + OUT + POWER - clear memory and set all settings as default.

IN + PWR helped to power up my unit.

Try pressing both the power and backlight keys at the same time. I have no idea why but this worked for me.

Make sure you are using the power button on the right side of the unit and not the backlight setting on the left. I know this sounds silly, but I just spent 20 minutes trying to figure out how to turn it on. Dah!!

My explorist Gc unit...on start up is looking for an active tracking file which is missing. I have a copy on my desktop. How can I get it back into the unit?

You can download the US basemap for the 500 at
http://www.megaupload.com/it/?d=EJTNQH03
Rename it BASEMAP.MGI
Then copy it in the directory "background maps" in the SD card of your 500, by using a SD card reader/writer.
Insert the SD card in your 500 and connect it to your PC; then turn it on;it will turn on regularly, because the basemap in the card will be detected; turn it to USB file transfer mode, and copy the basemap from the SD card to the directory "background maps" of the 500.
If you already have the file ..just rename it like I said ..and copy it ..using the sd card in the reader...Than if it is not functional ..just reset it ..and reload the file the proper way by reloading maps..

Cant not get watereays on explorist 500 in canada

You can try to update your GPS firmware.
Before you update your Magellan eXplorist 500 firmware or install a custom basemap, Magellan recommends that you backup all of your GPS data.
Click here to download the firmware update (Version 2.57)
Connect your Magellan GPS unit via the USB drive.
Double-click on the update file to begin the installation process.
Follow the on-screen instructions .

We have a Magellan Explorist GC that we have had for only a couple of months. It freezes when turning on. The Magellan name comes up and the spinning compass thing, but then the spinning thing just...

I had the same problem. Was able to fix it as follows:
1. Turn unit off (pull battery if on/off won't respond) 2. Plug unit into PC with USB cable 3. Hold the menu key and the joystick in the "up" position and power unit on. Make sure you H O L D all three buttons as described until unit is fully powered on. 4. This should allow the unit to go into maintenance/disk access mode. Go to the Magellan website and download the newer version of the system (ver 1.4 as of this post). 5. Follow the install directions.
After doing this, my unit came back on just fine. From what I've read, ver 1.0 of the system has some issues.

Magellan explorist 500 wont recognize sd card. Is there any type of card recomended i have tried 3 diferent cards in 2 diferent units but when i try to turn sd memory on it wont let me.

  • Try to check the Sd card if its already formatted. because if the sd card is still not formatted it will not work to your GPS.

NMEA communication does not work ( but file transfer is OK)

Try rebooting windows, with gps off connect the cable to gps.

Go out side get a good gps signals on nav menu.

Set the gps communications menu to , nmea, 2.1

Plug the device into a good usb port.

If you look under modems, in control panel you should see a new modem called explorist xxx

If you look at the properties for that you can see its com port number.

I just tried this program http://www.visualgps.net/VisualGPS/

and it views nmea from the explorist, just set the com port to the one in the explorist modem .
