Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54GS Router (e125894)

Trying to Install a wireless router WRT54GS; ISP Cox Cable

I've done everything 'by the book' regarding the procedures both from instructions given by Linksys on how to configure subject router and instructions by Cox Cable. Final result is that my router is broadcasting the SSID, WEP Encryption advisement and 'excellent' five bar signal. Problem is, can't connect to the Internet?? Any help in this regard will be appreciated.

Yes. I'm taking a day off from working on this issue...Valentine's Day and all!:) Another person in this forum suggests I enter into the router' config panel and clone the MAC address of the cable modem. I did the 'clone' thang but didn't verify if the 'cloned' MAC identified was indeed the cable modems?? I guess I would have to do a IPCONFIG /ALL to retrieve it?? Anyway, sure wish the technicians at COX were more helpful. Guess they want that $70 home setup fee pretty badly. Anywho..thanks for your suggestion and am always open to whatever else I can do/explore to get wireless connectivity to the net.

I don't know what type of internet connection you have. If you have cable internet connection, you can copy the mac address of your modem to your router - that's what you call, cloning. If you have DSL connection, you can just obtain an IP Address from the modem to the router. If it's an Internet connection that is requires authentication, you can use the PPPoE type of connection. You can configure your router to any of the mentioned configuration above.

Is COX providing cable internet connection? if so, you have to clone the MAC address of the modem, then after that, reset the modem and restart your modem, router, computer.

Lost my linskys wireless-g wrt54gs cd installer

you can setup the router manually without the CD.

1> plug a network cable into the router, and your computer

2> type the following into your web browser http://192.168.1.1

3> enter your settings for your ISP

4> choose your wireless settings (it is recomended to setup some security on your network so people can't have access to your network without authorization)

Error 322 instaling a WRT54GS V7.2 linksys router

HI! I bliv u are having some issue setting up ur router.. I will be more than glad to assist u. . here are the steps u need to do:
1. press the reset button on the back of the router for 20sec..while pressing the reset button, unplug the power plug and after 2secs while pressing the reset button plug it back in and press for 30secs after that unplug the router for 15secs then plug it back in..once all the lights are solid and ok
2. connect the ethernet cable to port1 of the router and the other end to the lan port of your computer..
3. pull up ur browser then type at the url:192.168.1.1.or 192.168.0.1 or u can check the routers default gateway by right clicking the network icon on the lower right of your task bar and click on status and it will show the ip address of the computer, subnetmask and default gateway, the default gateway is the routers ip address, once u type in to the url, it will ask u the username and password, by default the username is admin and the password is 1234 or just leave it blank
4. it will show the setup page of the router. u can set the router on the specific internet setup that u have.
a. if ur isp is a cable company, normaly u need to do a mac clone on the router setup page by cloning the computer that is reg to the cable company, how to determine it. ex. the computer that is reg to the cable company is a desktop or laptop, if this computer is connected to the modem directly and u can access internet.
b. once u determined it u need to connect this computer directly to the router and do a mac clone and set ur internet settings to auto-dhcp..then save the settings and after that, unplug to the power of the modem and router, plug in 1st the power of the modem then once all lights lit, plug in the router, then once all lights lit, try to pull up a browser that ur computer is connected directly to the router.. ur cable connection shud be, cable from the modem will go to the WAN port of the router and connect ethernet cable on port1 going to the lan port of the computer..once u can access the internet, u can now access again the setup page of the router by typing at the url:192.168.1.1 and u can setup the wireless settings, u need to create a ssid or wireless name and a security..
5. If ur isp is a dsl normaly they give u a username and password to connect to the internet, ur settings on the router should be PPPoe
6. If ur isp gives u a static ip address settings, u need to set the router to isp setup.
a. how to check the isp of the isp given to u..
1. click on start
2. run
3. type cmd
4. it will show a dos prompt
5. from the dos prompt type ipconfig/all
6. it will list the ip address, subnet, default gateway, dns server
this settings should be type in to the settings on the router for static ip addressing..
7. Once your done on the internet setting, go to your wireless connection settings and you can create a wireless network name or ssid, set a security by selecting wep, wpa, wpa2.
8. once all is set. save the settings and to check if your laptop can access the wireless network that you did, turn on the wireless switch of your laptop, once its on, it will show the wireless network icon on the lower right of the taskbar, right click it and select on view available network, the network name that u did should list, just select it and connect and it will ask for the password, just type the password and connect, you should be connected to the wireless network and have internet access..
9. If you are going to hook up your desktop to the wireless connection, you need to install a wireless network adapter, install the driver and do the same thing as u did to the laptop, for the desktop no need of turning on the wireless switch, once you install the driver correctly, it will show a network icon..
if you have any query pls feel free to get in touch.. good luck

how about when you connect your computer direct to the modem is it doing the same speed? make sure to verify what speed (download/upload) you are getting from your ISP.

WPA encription disappeared, cannot access router

First get the DNS setting of your ISP. If you have activated the internet connection icon on system tray. View its status then i think it support menu. It will give you the details and the ISP DNS. Or ask your ISP provider.

Then connect your Computer LAN to LAN1port of the router thru LAN cable. Set your Computer LAN setting, input your LAN ipadress say 192.168.1.2 then subnet say 255.255.255.0 then default gateway ot the router say it is 192.168.1.1 then in DNS input your ISP DNS. Test it goto router's utility page, input user and pass. Or ping the router, on windows dos type ping 192.168.1.1 enter, you will got 4 lines for good connection.

Now connect the Internet cable to WAN port if it is LAN cable. browse the internet. This is the first step.

Router won't install

If your connecting through the ethernet cable then you don't have to install the router on your pc. You just need to configure it for your wireless network.

You do this by using your web browser to access the setup screen using the routers default IP, which tends to be either:
http://10.0.0.1 or
http://192.168.1.1

When you get there you can configure how it gets an address from the ISP, how it assigns addresses to your PCs, your SSID (Network Name) and if you want to use a password to access the router or your wireless network. You also need to set what channel your using (1 - 10).
Have you done all this?

Linksys wrt54gs Set up

are you sure what is configuration you do is correct . i mean that your isp details and all those thing. if you using the wired then you have to put the cable of isp in the wan port and other to the lan port. and see the proxy server is there or not if there then leave it. and which type of connection you using static ip,dynamic ip, or pppoe connection in that also you have know it.

if you using the wireless then go and disable the proxey server and give the right configuration..
