Ricoh 1018d won't add toner after installing toner bottle.
Just got the machine used and toner indicator came on. Ordered toner and received toner. However toner said Gestetner on label. We called and manufacturer said that the Gestetner, Ricoh and Savin were all the same toner and toner bottle. Removed cap from bottle and Installed bottle in toner hopper and slid into machine and held firmly while locking green handle. Checked to see that the bottle was being held in place and was turning and they were. Machine goes into toner adding mode and then back to replace toner bottle after a few minues. Looked inside hopper and saw claws that are supposed to pull out cap at bottle mouth but can't determine whether this is actually happening. Are the Ricoh, Gestetner and Savin bottles the same and is it just possible that the hopper has a problem? I did check and the part # for the hopper B0393031 is the same for the Ricoh, Gestetner and Savin. Thanks for any advice.
Re: Ricoh 1018d won't add toner after installing toner...
The part numbers are different for each toner from ricoh, Lanier, Savin and Gestetner. From what I recall is the bottles are different, check the old bottle vs new. Also if the machine had run very low you may have to open and close the fron cover several times, this intiates a toner feed program.

This can mean two possible solution. First one can be that the second tap cap of the toner bottle, the one the machine need to open is not open by the machine. you can notice that on the top of the bottle have a cap with a point in the center. try to remove this cap and carefully insert the bottle again in the machine. if this not help then the PCU photoconductor unit gears are wasted.
The bottle full message indicates that the waste toner collection bottle is full. The full bottle needs to be removed and the toner disposed of properly. Then a replacement collection bottle needs to be installed and the waste toner counter reset. This site has the toner bottle: http://www.precisionroller.com/waste-toner-containers-for-ricoh-aficio-mp-c4500/details_47769.html . It is possible to reuse the bottles but most people will spill the toner when they try to empty a collection bottle. You do not want loose toner in your environment.
Turn off the printer (at the power switch) and wait for the lights to stop blinking before attempting the replacement. See page 62 of the network guide for the replacement procedure. See https://www.ricoh-usa.com/downloads/downloads.aspx to search for your printer and get the manuals.
I reproduce below the content from Ricoh official website. The instructions to install toner cartridge are as follows:
Note: You can make about 50 copies even after the Add Toner indicator begins flashing, but replace toner early to prevent poor copy quality. Please read the following warnings and notes before attempting to add toner. WARNING
Do not incinerate used toner or toner containers. Tonerdust might ignite when exposed to an open flame. Dispose of used tonercontainers in accordance with local regulations.
Keep toner (used or unused) and toner containers out of reach of children.
Iftoner or used toner is inhaled, gargle with plenty of water and moveinto a fresh air environment. Consult a doctor if necessary.
If toner or used toner gets into your eyes, flush immediately with large amounts of water. Consult a doctor if necessary.
If toner or used toner is swallowed, dilute by drinking a large amount of water. Consult a doctor if necessary.
Avoidgetting toner on your clothes or skin when removing a paper jam orreplacing toner. If your skin comes into contact with toner, wash theaffected area thoroughly with soap and water.
Iftoner gets on your clothing, wash with cold water. Hot water will setthe toner into the fabric and may make removing the stain impossible.
To replace the toner, follow these steps:
Keep the device switched on and only add toner when "Toner is Almost Empty" is displayed
Open the Front Cover
Lift the large green handle up to its full extent
Press and hold down the green lever to the left of the green handle
Use the green handle to pull out the Toner Tray slightly then release the green lever
Pull out the Toner Tray to its full extent
Push the neck of the Toner Bottle back towards the device until you can see the top of the bottle
Lift out the Toner Bottle by the neck - being careful not to scatter loose toner
Dispose of the Toner Bottle in accordance with your local environmental instructions
Obtain a new Toner Bottle and shake it gently from side to side at least 5 times
Remove and discard the black cap and place the Toner Bottle in the tray with the neck towards you
Push the neck back into the black housing of the tray
Push the whole assembly back into the device until it clicks into place
Push the green handle down fully and close the Front Cover
The device will perform a few seconds of internal checks before it is ready for use again
Important:
Fault may occur if you use toner other than the recommended type.
When adding toner, do not turn off the operation switch. If you do, settings will be lost.
Always add toner when the device instructs you.
When a message "Add toner." is shown on the display panel, replace the toner.
Store the toner bottles in a cool, dry place free from direct sunlight.
Store on a flat surface.
Do not repeatedly install and remove toner bottles. This will result in toner leakage.
Do not shake the removed toner bottle. Remaining toner might scatter.
Sounds to me like the 'plunger' from the top of the bottle may have remained in the machine when you removed the other bottle, and is blocking the flow. Remove the toner bottle and check. Otherwise, are there any other messages showing, such as "close cover", or something similar? If so, these machines did have a problem, that I may be able to advise you further
I suspect that it is the PCU causing the problem, and the message should clear once the PCU is installed and it (automatically) runs it's calibration cycle. Likely the toner auger gear has seized on the PCU, and broken. If the light does not go off after installing the PCU, then you may need a technician, as the toner motor may not be working, or there is a blockage within the toner hopper itself.....but again it is likely the PCU, especially if the toner bottle was empty when it needed replacement. Was it empty?? Did the machine work for a few days, or at least for a while? If so, it seems like too much of a coincidence that this problem would come up at this time.
replace toner supply unit. inside of the unit are 4 mylars to push toner towards hopper exit gate. looks like them mylars are ripped off and the toner is not getting to the dev unit
thanks,
Ron
