This can happen when you use a battery that is almost without charge. Please remove the battery and charge it, before placing it back. Then be careful not to touch the lens, till the camera has a chance to retract it.
After you place the battery the lens should retract.
If the battery is really charged. You should not think it is charged, because you had it on the charger till the light indicated battery full.
There is also a chance you stopped the lens while it was coming out. A sensor detected this. To avoid damage to the lens construction, the camera switched off automatically. If that does not clear the problem, then the lens error is usually caused by mechanical faults concerning lens
assembly. This happens because there is dirt inside the lens (sand dust), or one part in the lens assembly is bad or went out of place. Because of this he lens cannot extend or retract fully, the error is
detected and lens error is returned.
Sometimes this can be fixed

asset getting back to normal. If if does not extend tapping gently the back of the camera, and if it does not retract helping lens back in while turning camera respectively on and off.

Hello there,
The E18 error is related to the LENS not able to retract fully. If it is still under warranty, I would advise you bring it to the nearest service center. This is to avoid further damages. Otherwise, you can try a few things below.
There are a couple of things you can do.
1. Turn it on and then off. Spray canned air around the lens.
If trick 1 will not work out, try this.
2. Make sure the battery is fully charged. Turn on the camera and then give it a couple of firm whacks on the side. Make sure nothing is blocking the lens and wait for it to fully retract.
Let me know how it goes.
the problem is that the lens is out of alignment. if its not making grinding sounds try manually help the lens to reseat itself. if that doesnt work its not ecomical to repair unit cuz parts and labor are about 120-130 dollars.
The battery probably needs charging. The camera will automatically shut down if the battery is going flat.
With the Exilim you need to make sure that you don't overcharge the battery by leaving it permanently docked in it's little docking station - this can damage the battery. There is an LED on the docking station which shows the status of the battery. Red is charging, green is fully charged - take it off the docking station.
