Question about Maytag Bravos MTW6600T Top Load Washer

Loud noise during spin cycle (Bravos washer) was told the bearing is pressed into the tub. Looking at parts list they show the "basket" and the "tub outer". Is the bearing in the "tub outer"?

Similar issue, lot of racket on final spin and was told only option was a $280 whole tub assembly. Dissasembled tub and removed bearings from shaft. Took to local bearing warehouse and got replacements for <$25. The small one was a Nachi Quest 6005-2NSE9 and the large one was 6006-2NSE9. It took me @ 4-6 hrs in total and had to work to get top bearing onto shaft but much more attractive option than replacement or whole tub. Extremely irritated with Maytag and will NOT give them another dime. A appliance less than 1.5 yr old should not have these issues - cheaply made. Is a shame as Maytag used to mean something, it meant quality but not anymore.

The front loader tubs can be two parts and usually the bearing is already pressed into the new outer tub. The basket has a shaft which inserts into the tub bearing. If you have a tub bearing problem, it is best to order both basket and tub. The shaft could be worn on the basket and not fit correctly into the the new tub bearing.

Sure you can buy bearings cheap, but that's just fixing the symptom and ignoring the underlying problem that caused them to fail. If you don't replace the shaft and the seal, water will seep into your new bearings and cause them to fail after a very short time. Whirlpool now sells a complete bearing replacement kit that includes the bearings, shaft, seal, grease, and glue, all for approximately $100. I bought one and installed it according to the instructions. My Maytag Bravos is now running like a new machine. The new seal has been redesigned to include a spring that helps to keep it snug around the shaft, so hopefully it will take longer for it to start leaking again. One important point: If ever you have a problem that causes soapy water to stay in the tub, get it out of there as soon as possible. Prolonged exposure to water (especially soapy water) will hasten seal failure. It's supposed to be wet during the wash cycle and then dry out in between uses. Don't let it stay under water for hours on end.

If it's a roaring noise, the tub bearing is probably wearing out. Spin the tub a little with your hand, if you hear a little of the roar, that's it.

Tip

Replacing a Rear Tub Bearing

Rear Tub Bearing Replacement
(Part 1 of 3)

This advice is for replacing the rear wash tub shell of most Kenmore Elite HE model FRONT LOADERS, along with Whirlpool Duet, and some Frigidaire FRONT LOADER models. This is a repair that would be rated as difficult due to the extensive disassembly and reassembly of components.

The requirement to replace the rear wash tub shell is usually attributed to the rear tub bearing failure in which the bearings are molded into the tub and cannot be replaced otherwise. In some situations the replacement of the inner spinner basket (stainless steel tub) may also be required due to the corrosion and breakage of the spider arms in the back of the basket that support the basket.

SYMPTOMS: Washer exhibits excessively loud “rumbling” type noise during the spin cycle, excessively vibrates, or won’t spin at all.

DETERMINING IF THE BEARING AND SPIN BASKET ARE BAD: With the washer door open, place your hand inside the basket and push straight up. If there is excessive play in the tub (wobbles up and down) the bearing is probably bad. If the spinner basket scrapes against the outer tub shell when you give it a spin, you will have to replace the inner spin basket as well. Unfortunately, you cannot see the condition of spinner basket supports until it is removed from the outer tub shells. In some cases, a brownish colored stain my show up on clothing as the bearing seal has been breached and leaks into the spinner basket.

Before starting this repair, make sure you read through all instructions thoroughly and place the washer is in an area that gives you plenty of space to work.

When it goes into the spin cycle it makes a loud knocking noise like a gear or belt is bad. what can i do, it is only 1 1/2 years old.

The spin bearing or basket drive may be worn or seized. These components allow the inner tub to spin freely inside the outer tub. When this is the problem, you usually hear a loud sound during the spin cycle. If the bearing is getting out of its way then its faulty weak motor causing this.Check out both the bearing and the motor. You can get required parts from www.repairclinic.com
