It is 5 years old - the top 1/2 stopped cooling, but the bottom half continued to freeze. In fact, a bag of ice I had on the top shelf thawed and as it leaked, it formed icicles on the bottom shelves!

Good day,
Sounds as if the fan in the freezer compartment isn't running. If so, remove the rear panel of the freezer compartment, inspect, and replace the motor if it tests bad.

If the fan is running, then look for a frost buildup on the lower half of the back panel.
If that's the case, then the defrost system has failed.
It is made up of 3 parts. The main heater, a calrod heater, mounted to the bottom of the cooling coil, and in the same area, a defrost thermostat, a round approx. 1" in diameter item that is clipped to the top of the coil.
Both can be tested with an ohm meter for continuity, once you remove the rear panel. However, the thermostat must be tested before it opens on it's own, which is about 50 degrees.
The last item is the defrost control which can be a timer or a solid state control board.
If it is a timer, you can advance it's shaft clockwise until the machine shuts off. If good it will turn the machine back on within 45 minutes. If not, it is bad and must be replaced.

Without a model number the answers are the best that be given.
If you want to post a response with details and model number, it would be a more detailed response from us.

Below is a description on defrost system basic functions to help you if needed.

Drain freezes and bottom ices up ii have thawed it cleaned the hose and it does the same thing each time

My be that the unit is not defrosting. There is a timer that turns off the freezer and turns on a heating element to melt the ice in the cooling fins. If this does not happen the fins fill with ice and ice begins to form as the water drips down under the ice. the bottom will freeze and the top will begin to warm.

Water freezing in bottom of freezer. freezer is 10 years old.

The defrost drain outlet is stopped up and freezing over.
Remove the bottom basket.
Turn the freezer off.
Look in the center of the freezer just below the cooling coils in the bottom of the freezer.
You will see a water drain trough.
It will be full of ice.
Use a hair dryer to thaw the ice and remove it.
The drain will become exposed.
It must be thawed also,so that you can pour water through it and the water goes all the way to the drain pan underneath.

My Kenmore Upright Freezer Model 25326432100 flashed "ER."

My freezer was purchased in February, 2004. It is a self defrosting freezer but ice has started forming along the bottom shelf and back wall. Also, after cleaning the freezer the other day it has stopped clycing. The freezer will stop running only if I turn it down to the #1 setting and then it will not come back on. If I turn it up to a higher setting the compressor will not stop running. It ran for over 24 hours and would not cycle unless I turned it off or set it at the #1 setting. When I unplugged it and pulled it away from the wall, there was a green water spot the size of a dinner plate underneath the freezer. Help!! Very Unhappy this freezer is only 6 years old. S in Phila.

The top half of the upright freezer is totally thawed but the bottom is frozen. I need the whole thing to freeze.....

Check for ice on back wall if iced up check defrost heater and defrost timer also check and besure evaperator fan is working check wireharness on heater, timer, and evap. fan motor.Sounds like you have a defrost prob. Turn off for 24hrs to melt ice turn unit back on if it works for a few days then ices back up you have a defrost prob.

Both Lights flashing and fridge not getting cold

I turned the fridge and freezer off using the circular dials, I then turned the unit off at the mains. Left it for a few minutes and then turned the power back on. I then turned the circular dials to "max" and then depressed the super cool and super freeze buttons to turn this facility on. This time they came on normally (not flashing) and no alarm sounded. The fridge and freezer then started to get cold. Once the unit had been running for several hours I then turned the dials to the 3/4 mark and depressed the super cool and super freeze buttons again to turn them off. Over night the fridge and the freezer appear to be working properly so I hope that my problem is solved. Maybe the unit just needed to "settle" before being switched on?

Upright freezer not cooling

The model number would help but it sounds like a sealed system leak or restriction. If thats the case I would not suggest trying this yourself. The water should freeze overnight and the frost should keep going to all the shelfs that have coils in them.

Whirlpool Freezer Model #EV150NXENOO

This one sounds like the defrost timer is not working and you are not getting a defrost cycle every 6-8 hours (or when needed). Another issue could be that air (moisture) is getting in from a leaky door seal, etc. and causing the freeze up. If you have a sealed system problem where the cooling coils are not uniformly frosted up then the defrost thermostat will not "know" there is an ice condition and therefore not go into defrost mode (same issue if the defrost t-stat is bad). After you have ALL the ice out of the unit it would be a good idea to take the interior rear cover off so you can view the coils. Start the freezer back up and watch over the next 1/2 hour or so to see that the entire coil is frosting up uniformly. If it isn't you may have a plugged system, a leak causing low refrigerant, etc. If over time the coils look uniformly frosted up you may have a defective defrost heating element itself (no heat, no defrost sort of thing). The defrost elements can be checked with a multimeter for continuity if you know how to do that sort of thing. It's hard to know a person's ability by these forums or if they can tackle certain test procedures.
