Our Kitchenaid Superba KSRG25FKBL15 has bad tasting water and ice cubes. We replaced the copper tubing which delivers the water to the fridge and that didn't help. We replaced the copper tubing again with plastic tubing...no better. Any suggestions? Our tap water doesn't taste this bad.
Our refridgerator has terrible tasting ice and water and we have tried everything to fix it. Is there a sure fire way to fix the problem. I would love to use the ice maker and water.

I had the same problem. I replaced the tubing both from the ice tray to the control valve(at the bottom rear of the fridge), and then the copper tubing from the control valve to the house water supply (I replaced it with a flexible pvc tubing - about $6 at Lowe's). I removed the ice maker itself and cleaned it thoroughly in vinegar. No improvement. None, Nada. Then I replaced the control valve itself. BINGO. Bad taste gone. The valve cost $14 on e-bay, and took about 5 minutes to replace.

They have either a mold build up problem that can occur after the unit is water tested at the factory or they have mold release residues in the lines an plumbing, I think it is actually mold though and went through 5 filters just to eliminate this as the cause. The fix I did worked perfectly, it eliminated every bit of that nasty chemical taste, what you need to do is flush the refrig with a white vinegar and water mix, here's how I bought a 2 gallon garden sprayer bottle, the type you pump to pressurize the liquid. The brand I recommend is "Roundup"because if you screw off the nozzle at the tip the exposed thread will fit into the water line hose at the water source end under the sink. You will need to cut the plastic tip off leaving just the thread, otherwise it will prevent you from screwing it into the tube. Fill the bottle with about 1 gallon of medium hot water and a full bottle of white vinegar. Removethe refrig water filter and then Pump up the bottle and at the same time squeeze the trigger on the sprayer and hold a large glass at the dispenser of the refrig. If no leaks, it should flow nicely but keep the bottle presurized. Keep the vinegar and water mix so that you can go through the flushing process twice. guarantee to fix your bad tasting water and cheap. It is also a process you should do once a year, to have the freshest tasting water also makes your $15 garden sprayer is worth the investment.

It could be a number of things, your filter could have bacteria in it which can happen with activated carbon. If you dont have a softener but you have Iron or hardness in your water these minerals and metals will completely precipitate from the water when frozen. First get your water tested so you know what you are dealing with.
I had a maytag fridge with the water was fine in the door.I bought a new GE fridge with water and ice in the door, the water had a plastic taste.The only thing i think of differnt was the filter in the new one.I took the filter off and the water taste better.
We are having the same sour taste for the water and/or ice. The we replaced the filter 2 months ago. THe book with the frig says to wash the ice bin and throw out the ice. Also it said that frozen foods in the freezer that are not sufficiently sealed can cause a sour taste in the water/ice. We decide to throw out a few things that had been opened before. We will see what that does.
But regarding the plastic taste, ice crushers use 2 different spiral mechanisms. One is plastic. After a while the plastic become brittle and little bits of it chaff off into the ice. The other type metal, eventually rusts and you get rust in the ice. Kind of a lose lose situations.
No body seems to have a good answer to this. Perhaps somebody could consider this for a solution - Defrosted the freezer yesterday - Amana Side-by-side. I noticed that the Galvanised Steel/Aluminium Shield on the heat exchanger was corroded - I cleaned it off and got that same very distinct smell of onions from my hands. Our ice has not been tainted of late. I think this shrowd is galvenised steel is the cause of the problem as we have never had onions in the freezer.

....well here is the problem (I own a Fridgidare) all the lines are plastic (inside the fridge, nothing to do with the copper supply line) I bought this brand new and noticed when a glass of ice would melt, the melted water tasted like plastic. Changed the filter (even tho it was new) and now that first glass of the day, I fill it half way and dump it out (because the water has been sitting in the plastic lines) and then the water tastes fine. But the ice, I gave up. I buy a bag from Meijer's and dump it into the ice dispenser. Funny how their ice is crystal clear and mine is white (and tastes like plastic)
My water tasted like plastic and I always buy filters when they should be replaced. I stopped drinking the water because I hated the taste. I would get ice out of the refrigerator and then get bottled water. Since we were not drinking the water, it was stored in the plastic container in the refrigerator which was making it taste even more like plastic. I decided to take a pitcher and fill it up three times and dump the water. Once I did that, the water did not taste like plastic anymore. The ice was never a problem for me. I hope this helps.
We are having the same problem but do not know what to do. We have replaced the filter. Cleaned the freezer and refrigerator out completly but the ice still tastes bad.
We have the same problem; it started when we moved to a house with well water. Now we buy ice and dump it in the ice maker and drink bottled water. All this money for a side by side with water and ice despenser for nothing! We also have front loader washer smell. Is it well water? I miss the city...

Yes, we regularly replace the filter as well and that doesn't seem to have any impact. We won't be buying an ice maker or water in the door model next time. Thanks though.
We too are having the same problem, but only with the ice maker, the water tastes fine. The ice tastes almost like plastic!! I know it is not the copper tubing because the ice from the replaced refrigerator tasted fine. The ice machine is a whirlpool ice maker in the kitchenaid refrigerator. Would sure like someone to let me know if there is a solution.
My ice tastes bad, the water does too. However the taste is more of a sour taste. Almost like soured clothes from a washing machine. I didn't really notice it until after I changed the filter. About a week later I used the door dispenser to get a glass of water. I noticed tiny bubbles and a tangy taste. Then the ice began to have a sour smell and taste.
I have cleaned the dispenser. I'm cleaning the entire freezer right now. I hope cleaning the freezer will fix the problem, but doubt it. But it needs it anyhow. I did have a beer blow up in there, but I don't see how that would affect the water. I do regularly dump the ice.
I think I might buy a new filter next and clean the filter receptacle really well -somehow. I did notice that smell when I changed the filter the first time...

I have a Kenmore side by side water/ice dispenser. It was in storage sealed for 13 months. I moved into a new house and to my dismay found mold had grown in the sealed frig. After cleaning frige with bleach and pine so I was able to clean out all visible mold. Connected the water line to frige and replaced the filter, but water and ice both taste funny,
I dumped out several quarts of water and the bad taste still remains. Could the long term storage ruin the water dispenser?
my frig has water and ice in the door. it used to taste fine. Then I went travelling and put the frig into storage for only 6 months. after reconnecting it (with same brand/spec plastic piping) and flushing many quarts of water through it, the water now tastes really bitter and so does the ice taste awful. Please, can anyone help all of us - the manufacturers maybe?
I have a Whirlpool side by side. Only 1 month old and the water and ice tastes funny. Kind of metallic. We have replaced supply lines twice, new filter came with fridge. Plumber thinks maybe something from the fridge is leaching into the water sitting in the fridge cooling b/c when the water hasnt had a chance to sit in the fridge to cool it tastes like regular water out of the sink. advice?
I have had the same problem in fridges with ice makers since 1970, 4 different fridges. For about 8 months, in the 70's I solved the problem. I was working on a program at work to filter air, and had an extra charcoal activated filter, with convolutions for additional area, about 11 X 11 X 2 inches. I simply laid it in the freezer, below the ice maker, and the ice tasted fresh for about 8 months, then I guess the filter got saturated. I tried recycling it by putting outside in the sun, but I guess those filters don't unload odors easily. I haven't seen these filters available commercially, and I don't know if they are recyclable. But I think it is an air-born issue, not a water source issue. If someone knows where to get a filter like this and how to recycle them, please contact me.
We are having same problem we bought house last June and it came with this side by side kenmore elite refrigerator water and ice in door. Every thing fine. Knew time to change filter when things started smelling. Changed water improved, but ice has not . have empited severals bins of ice. I see someone said they cnanged control valve. What is that and where do yuou find it.

Same here. My husband will fix it, but google only comes up with a "how to" for intel valve and not a "how to" on a control valve.Where is the control valve.
