We had this problem for about 2 weeks, we discovered that having the camera auto retracted after the "ZOOM ERROR" message, giving the camera couples of light slaps (slap the camera's LCD side and aim the camera down), this fixed the camera right away
I suspected a grain of sand might be blocking the zoom. I cut a "finger" of computer paper 1cm x 5cm (80gm) I carefully worked this around the inner & outer zoom tubes. It goes in a surprisingly long way. I then powered up & dropped the batteries out before the lens had time to retract & repeated the trick with the paper. A tiny grain of sand was retreaved. It now seems to work for the moment? All at your own risk!
1. Remove and change out main batteries.
2.Remove back-up battery (Little coin-sized battery), wait 1 minute, re-insert battery. If no change replace back-up battery.

I think a grain of sand was blocking the zoom tubes. This will not work if the camera has been dropped & the zoom apparatus is bent. It is entirely at your own risk & may invalidate any guarantee but they may charge anyway if you have got sand in.
I cut a finger of 80gm computer paper 1cm X 5cm. Inserted this first around outer zoom tube & worked it all around. It goes in quite deep so be gentle. I switched on to open zoom & tipped out batteries before it had time to close & repeated procedure. When I put batteries back in it worked OK. I repeated procedure with lens fully extended. I found a thin bit of plastic packing worked better as it did not kink so easily. It is still working today having failed 100% before.

I have an Olympus SP550 Ultra Zoom which I bought about two years ago. The camera has developed a problem. When I turn it on, the zoom lens goes part way out, a message "zoom error" shows on the screen, and it powers itself off. I thought it might just be the batteries, but new ones didn't help.
I have had this camera just over a year and it has just gone wrong - it shows zoom error on the screen! as described by other people. Is this a design fault ? I am going to contact Olympus - I paid £350 for this camera when it first came out last year and I expected it to last a lot longer than 12 mths!!
the screen reads "zoom error", the power goes off, and the zoom goes back into the camera. jack from california
when i turn it on it says zoom error the camera is aboyt 80 days old
Same problem. Camera is a year old. Just stopped working. Zoom error during POST, the power down.
When camera is turned on, zoom error occurs and camera shuts itself off. Very frustrating. Past warranty period unfortunately.
when i turn on my camera it says zoom error and turns off by its self
same
I haven't even taken my first picture yet and I am getting this. I don't know what it could be.
