Kenwood KDC 241 SA car radio 'Protect'.

Kenwood KDC 241 SA car radio keeps displaying 'Protect'. The manual says it is a speaker wire shorting out. Is it ALWAYS the speaker wire shorting, or are there other causes?
Thanks

    Cheers kenw.

My original Clarion radio 'lost' the radio station after around 20 minutes. 'Experts' blamed the radio and advised fitting a new radio. This Kenwood is that new radio (now about 5 days old).

Guess what? Protect mode comes on after about 20 minutes.

I suspect that the 20 mins limit for both radios COULD be tied in with some malfunction of the 'Economy Mode' built in to Peugeot 406's.

So in short, the speaker wires are fine, the speakers are fine, and the unit is brand spanking new.

Guess what? The 'protect mode' comes on at around 20 mins. I reckon that with both radios limits being around 20 mins, that the problem lies with the car and it's stupid 'Economy Mode' setting, which turned off the power to the original Clarion after 20 mins of listening with the ignition off. I had to start the engine to get the radio to play again. i think it's a wiring loom, computer problem.

You could have a shorted speaker wire, a blown speaker; or the output ic in the deck itself could be bad.

if the car itself limits the voltage, this could definitely be a problem. most radios shut down if the voltage gets below 9 to 10 volts. if it limits the current, that could be a problem also.

How do i get the KDC 355U out of protect mode

The Kenwood KDC-355U display will read Protect if the receiver detects a short. Check all of the wiring between the unit and the speakers. If you find a loose wire or a spot where a bare wire is touching part of the car (or another bare wire), secure the wire and use electrical tape to insulate the bare wires as needed.

If these steps don't work, then the short is inside the receiver. The unit will need to be repaired. Kenwood has the documentation for the KDC-355U here: https://www.kenwood.com/cs/ce/index.php?model=KDC-355U&lang=index . The direct link to the manual is http://manual.kenwood.com/files/52d601ce30916.pdf .

I hope this helps.

My Kenwood KDC-U453 cd receiver displays "PROTECT" on connection and nothing works - any solutions appreciated!!!!

Pull the radio out, tape off all wires but yellow, red and black. Twist red/ yellow together and attach to positive 12 volt, attach black wire to negative 12 volts. Turn on radio and see if it comes out of protect mode. If it does, you will have to troubleshoot all of the speaker wires to find a short.

Possible failure of power supply / output section/drive components.

Radio display says protect. does not emit sound.

Sounds like you have either a short in your speaker wire somewhere, wires touching in the back of the unit or a short inside the stereo itself... Try pulling the radio out and unhooking all of your speakers...Turn unit back on after all speakers are disconected...If unit still shows protect, then radio is bad...If it doesnt, power off and hook up speakers one by one and power it back on till it shows protect again....When it does, the last speaker wire you hooked up has either a crossed wire or the speaker is bad...

Kenwood KDC-MP732 CD Player in protect mode how do i get it off had a blown speaker fixed it and still in protect mode

Protect Mode (Blink): The speaker wire has a short-circuit or touches the chassis of the vehicle, and then the protection function is activated.

Solution: Wire or insulate the speaker cable properly and press the reset button.

Here is a copy of the Instruction Manual for the Kenwood KDC-X790 and KDC-MP732.

The word protect comes out on my radio and i dont' have a manual for it

"protect" displays when there is a wiring fault. Check all connections at the deck to the wiring harness and then check where all the speakers and amp are connected.
"Protect" usually indicates a short or loose ground. So make sure all your connections are snug and not shorting out or coming loose.

Kenwood kdc-w3041 protect mode

Hello ia737,

The "protect" display is probably being caused by a shorted or grounded (touching vehicle chassis or other ground) speaker wire. Check the speaker wires for bare spots, etc and insulate or replace as necessary.

You do not need to remove the fuses to force a "cold reset" of the W-3041. You can simply press the "reset" button on the front of the unit. It's the little recessed button at the lower left of the volume control. Use the straightened end of a paper clip or ballpoint pen to momentarily hold the button in.

Hope this helps.
