That simply means that your drive is in non mac format. You can obtain compatibility mode software for this from mac addicts or other mac related sites.

I see now. Ok what you can do to try saving your data is to buy this item from Geeks.com

If your hard drive is still good, and it's just a burned out power supply, or bad board in the passport, you can extract the drive from the plastic case and use the above dongle to read your data. This cable will work on a mac or a pc with no problems. I use 2 of them all the time. Most of the time external drives still have good drives in them, but the passport hardware tends to fail with constant use.

Some flash drives need to be formatted for the the device that you use it on.
the Mac you are using it on may not recognize the device and see it as incompatible.

Xp not recognizing my 250gb WD passport

The Western Digital My Passport line, besides the Essential Series, is originally formated for a Mac (in the HFS+ format) and as such cannot be read by Windows PCs. You can either get a program to read the External such as Macdrive, or format it to NTFS or FAT32; formats that are readable by Windows. I would recommend formatting it to NTFS, because you can only transfer up to 4 Gigabyte files to FAT32, while NTFS is nearly limitless.

MacBookpPro osx10.4.11 doesn't recognize new WD passport

the problem is that your western digital operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple macs is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac.

an excellent free mac NTFS driver can be found here-

If your system detects the connected device that is a good start. Was the drive formatted for another operating system? Certainly try the drive on another system and/or another drive on your system.

WD Passport plugged into mac then PC, but no drive letter

Hi

You can either format the drive using the PC or install MacDisk on your PC witch will allow you to view any Mac formatted drive on the PC.

Click the link to download macdisk7.5.7.5 or reformat the drive to NTFS which the mac and PC will be able to share if the need arises in the future.
