Make sure you've taken the protective tape off the cartrige. Usually its orange and noticeable.
Sometimes generic cartriges have a small chip and a registration that allows the printer to talk between the cartrige from what I under stand maybe ink levels and to protect profits on not allowing generic companies to make a more economical product competitively
the printer can sometimes be power cycled to allow it to accept the generic cartrige.
there are normally settings on a printer to see if you can change the internal settings can be altered to allow non Original Electronic Manufacturors products in a Canon Printer.
make sure that the type of printer you have is compatible with the printer. the computer may require a black cartridge or a color cartrige in a very specific location. they might not be allowed to be switched.
make sure the cartrige can slide in and out of it's slot comfortably.
FOR office printers. there are also protective tabs holding the ink in the cartrige. this side tab on the cartrige is there for shipping. these are normally on large 30 pound printers. top front loading Office printers. the tab needs to be turned hard and swift either clockwise or counter clockwise if you can't cleaning pull it out. Also remember your boss paid a lot for that cartrige dont break something your not comfortable breaking. be warned in advance this dry ink will spill and is hard to clean and harder to clean from clothing.
as per a fast solution a smaller printer and certainly a cartrige can actually be brought into a computer and electronics store whilst looking to buy a new print cartrige. Make sure if you do bring a piece of your own electronics into a store you check in with security. let them know its yours; wave it in front of a camera if youd like.

pull out the ink cartridge and look all around it you may have left the thin plastic tape like peice on it . peel that off and replace it in there and restart the printer you should be good to go.
