The switch on the lens was locked. It is solved now. I had to place the focus ring in the middle and not at the extremities of it in order to unlock the switch. There's a switch on the lens. Does it not move? Does the lens not focus in the normal range once the switch is off the macro position?There's a switch on the lens. Does it not move? Does the lens not focus in the normal range once the switch is off the macro position?

1) Zoom - this is by push pull - so you push the lens out to wide angle
2) To switch to manual focus - will need to be done on the camera and then you can use the front control ring to focus - 4) also you can use the button to switch to macro mode - BUT only with the Zoom at 35mm - lens fully extended
3) You have an aperture range of 2.8 - 22 this varies the amount of light allowed into the lens - 2.8 is the most light - F4 to F5.6 to F8 - each change halfs the light allowed in - so changing from F4 to F5.6 half the light
hi ! iam too a D40 holder,u can opt for AF-s versions or HSM sigma,both of them autofocus on d40,can go for 18-200 AFs VR or if u need still longer end go for 70-300 but it is costly than the sigms 70-300APO DG HSM MACRO..,its a much better reviewed lens and dont forget the cost..anyway do some research before considering..good luck
Lock it at f/32. Autofocus lenses have a lock for smallest aperture (highest number) because that is wht the camera body expects. The lock won't engage at any other position.
Here is Nikon's specs of lens compatibility for the D40X:
Compatible Lenses*: Nikon F mount with AF coupling and AF contacts Type G or D AF Nikkor: 1) AF-S, AF-I: All functions supported; 2) Other Type G or D AF Nikkor: All functions supported except autofocus 3) PC Micro-Nikkor 85mm f/2.8D: Can only be used in mode M; all other functions supported except autofocus 4) Other AF Nikkor*â¹/AI-P Nikkor: All functions supported except autofocus and 3D Color Matrix Metering II 5)
Non-CPU: Can be used in mode M, but exposure meter does not function;
electronic range finder can be used if maximum aperture is f/5.6 or
faster 6) IX Nikkor lenses cannot be used *â¹ Excluding lenses for F3AF
You might want to check the position of the aperture ring on the lens.
If it is not set at the highest number, ( IE smallest aperture, f22,f32
), then the camera will display that error message
