I have not been able to get the audio to work---it beeps at the bootup and hdd password screens, but I can't get a peep out of it in windows. What the heck is a "base system device"? whatever this is, may be my problem because I don't know what it is to install it. I tried trial and error, but the "wizard" only wants to go online, and doesn't find anything if it does (aka useless wizard).
Also, I can''t figure out what multimedia controller to install, and "help" is no help. This laptop has been pretty solid for me since fixing the power connector problem, all I need is to identify this base system device...anyone have a clue?

base system device
Base system device could be the audio on the motherboard or the audiocard itself. go to the page that has system devices and find your audio and supported devices and see if the latest driver is available. when you repaired the connector, I take it you had to pretty much remove everything to get to the board connector. could it be you didn't reconnect a connector? those thin film flat cable connectors can be a pain.

I reopened the casing and checked every connector of any stripe I could find, and still no sound other than the system beeps that tell me the speakers themselves are operational. I may have to wipe my hard drive clean and start over. I have an I/O conflict though, I just don't know what to do because the option to change the address isn't available for that device. Suggestions?
Hey! I didn't even notice that. (not that I would know what I was looking at anyway).
I'll check that out. I have some speakers from scrapped out laptops around here, if I find some that will fit and have that same plug on them, is there any reason I can't replace them?
Also, I forgot to ask what would be the problem since headphones or external, amplified speakers don't get sound either? Drivers, maybe?
Thanks for your time---
