My hp 2605dn doesn't print red very dark even though the toner cartridge is full

The 2600's and 2605's share the same problem.
The scanner has to be removed and cleaned because magenta toner builds up on the laser scanner mirror.
You need a service manual.

I have a HP laser 2600n and it is streaking magenta horizontally.

Sounds like the red cartridge was removed or tilted and leaked toner on the drum. Just do a self clean and it will clear up. It in the maintenance menu.

HP 2605dn printing pale on magenta

This is likley to be the common problem (with this model of printer) of the laser unit having dirty lenes and/or mirrors.

Typically the magenta is the first colour to deteriorate.

To rectify this problem there's a fair bit of dismantling to be done in order to get the laser unit out.

Then you can open the laser unit up and clean the lenses and mirrors CAREFULLY. You don't want to scratch the surface silvered mirrors, or disturb the alignment of any of the optical components.

You'll see the same problem and solution for HP1600, HP2600, and Canon LBP5000, as they all use the same laser unit.

When I print colour prints on my HP 2605DN the red ink is always missing although there is plenty of toner left. This problem started about a year ago and it got gradually worse. Now there is no red ink...

This is known as laser scanner contamination and it simply needs to be serviced, they will clean some mirrors on the laser which are impeding the light from making contact with the magenta toner, therefore not using it.

This is a common problem on these printers.

Cause is dirty lenses and or mirrors in the laser unit.

Solution is remove laser unit, open it, clean lenses and mirrors (very carefully to avoid disturbing alignments, and scratching).

The laser unit is deep in the printer, so it's quite a lot of work, but very rewarding when you've fixed it.

Alternatives - buy a replacement laser unit and swap and clean old one at leisure, or get an exchange refurb printer - if you think your mechanical skills arn't up to it.

Probably a dirty laser unit.

It's cleanable (but you need to take care

1 not to scratch any of the surface silvered mirrors.

2 not to disturb the alignment of any of the optical components.

It's quite a bit of dismantling (you start from the back of the printer and work your way 'into' it until you get to the laser unit). Youcan then remove the laser unit, open it up and clean it.

Tiny dots about 1 inch apart down the side of page

Again, this was actually HP Laserjet 3800. Problem solved by chatting with HP, and them having me go into a diagnosis mode that disabled cartridge check. Then, I removed the cyan cartridge, the dots went away. They then had me put the black into the cyan slot, and not dots appeared. I had backup toner on hand, swapped in a new cyan and magenta, and all was good. HP agreed to replace the cartridges.

Horizontal streaks on pages

Streaks at 2.82 inch intervals: Horizontal marks at this interval are the result of a mark on the fusing roller of the printer. In some cases, these marks can be cleared up by running a cleaning page through the unit. Laser Printer Cleaning sheets can be purchased at your local printer/office supply store. If the marks persist, this can indicate a more serious problem with the fusing roller that would require service attention.

Streaks at 3.74 inch intervals: Horizontal marks at this interval are the result of a mark on the image drum of the printer. There is no way to repair a damaged photosensitive image drum, so in the case that it is scratched or otherwise damaged, the entire CRU (toner/drum cartridge) would require replacement to clear up these marks.
