Tip it upside down on a towel. Look deep inside the pedestal where the hinge pin goes through. Right in the middle there is a single headless screw, undo it 2 turns. Wriggle things about and push the pin through to the middle, now tighten that screw up really tight. See how you go now.

I an sorry but the only Rod in the back of a K45SS is the pivot hinge pin that holds the motor head onto the base. if it fell out then the answer is simple. Turn the mixer upside down and wiggle the base while sliding the pin back in. Once the pin is back in place, there is a set screw in the middle of the shaft that you can see while you are replacing the pin, turn this back down with a flat head screwdriver untill it is firmly against the hinge pin. The culprit of the problem is this set screw. It came loose and allowed your hinge pin to vibrate out and then fall down or fall out as you said. once the set screw is back in place you will be fine. To avoid this problem in the future you might remove the screw entirely and put a drop of "Lock-Tight" on it that will help hold the setscrew in place for a very long time.

The Planetary plate comes attached to the shaft from the factory. It is not supposed to get
loose and come apart but it often does due to the mixer's vibrations and the user's constant
attaching and removals of the flat beater, wire whip or dough hook onto the beater shaft.
Try to remove the Planetary plate first : Gently rock it from side to side while pulling on it
to separate from the shaft. Notice the groves on both the shaft and inside the planetary
housing. That is how they are attached to one another at the factory (just friction, no screws
or pins). Now for a permanent solution:
Take a trip to Home Depot or Ace hardware and buy the J-B Industro Weld Compound
(Not the 5 minute type). Mix an equal amount from both tubes (Black and Red). Use a Q-Tip
and apply a thin layer of the mixture on both the shaft (grooved section) and inside the
planetary housing. Now re-attach the planetary plate to the shaft. Use a long strip of duct tape
to hold the plate in place (to prevent it from falling back out). Allow the epoxy to dry overnight
or at least for 8 hours.
The Planetary assembly is now permanently attached to the shaft of the mixer.

Tegan, sorry to hear you tilt mixer head is drooping and causing rubbing problems with the mixing bowl. This should be pretty easy to fix, if you?ve got a small blade screw driver and a small hex driver (or jewelers screw driver). First, do you still have the K45SS Parts List? If not, you can download a PDF version from the KA website. Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number (in your case, use KSM90P) and select one of the files that appear under Parts List. Turn to page 4 - Case, Gearing and Planetary unit, which shows the exploded view diagram and locate Illus. Nos. 29 & 30. Page 5 lists the parts as Adjusting Screw and Set Screw respectively. What?s probably happened is that over 12 years of operation, the vibrations from your mixer has caused the set screw to loosen and drop, hence the lower mixer head. Both screws will need to be ?adjusted? to move the head back to its original position. Now the problem is removing the head from its pedestal. Turn to page 8 and gently remove Illus. No. 7, Hinge Pin, with a hammer and pin driver. With the hinge pin removed the mixer head and pedestal can be separated and you should have access to adjusting and set screws. I would inspect them for wear and tear, and replace them, if you deem appropriate. It may take a few trial reassemblies to get the mixer head back to the original factory position, but once there, everything should be OK. I hope this helps! Howard, Burke, VA

Hi, Mixing Dough is tough. the neading hook really works hard and the pin will like to wander out on the left side of the mixer "right side if your facing the it". What I did was find an smaller elastic band and with the pin sticking out a 1/3 of an inch from the opposite side from which it wanders out.

loop the band on it as many times as possible so its stays on tight . with this you now have a bumper and as the pin vibrates to wander out the elastic bumper will gently keep pulling it back during the vibration cycle keeping it in check .

Works perfect but still inspect the pin and bumper before each use.

I just fixed mine this moring!!
Solution:
1- Lift head. In the lifted position you will see the head of an adjusting screw. Turn it to the left say a half turn.
2- Lower head and see if it is still too low. If so, do it again.

I had to turn mine like two plus full turns.
I beleive it goes into a nylon insert so that the threads are cut as the screw is put in the first time. If the screw is too loose, it may be possible that over time the head could slowly drop because of vibration and the screw slowly moving inward again. If that happens, a new nylon insert may be needed (but that is a different story).

There is another screw that may be loose of the head moves too much right and left. I also had that issue. This screw will be seen if you lay the machine on its side and look up the shaft (pedestal) of the base (large empty area the head attaches to). You will see a small screw head (first item up the open part). That set screw holds the unit in position on the hinge pin to stop movement from right and left.

there should be a lip on the shaft that hold this up. You insert the shaft from the bottom and a pin goes through the gear to hold it in place. Look at the IPB HERE.
