Error is inner cover is open.

The "inner cover" can be seen if you open the paper output door, which you have to do to open the "printer cover" to get inside the machine and install the ink cartridges. The inner cover is a black bar right inside here. Push it up firmly enough , and it will snap up.

It's actually not a "black bar". On mine it is grey. It's an inside cover 2 inches above where the paper comes out after it is printed. I think when it is on the down position, it is used for feeding envelopes. But we need to have it flipped up.

I have had this error message and no matter what I do, the message won't clear and the printer will not operate. I have closed the "inner door", powered down, even unplugged it from the computer to reset. The message will clear when I restart, but as soon as I try to copy or print, it looks like it will work, but then I hear a slight click and the message comes back. The door isn't open, but something is communicating that it is. Anyone else have this problem?

I kept getting the "Inner Cover is Open" message no matter what I did to the printer. I read and followed all the hints to no avail. I noticed in the lower left hand corner of the inner cover, if you take a qtip with alcohol and stick it in this space and it comes out full of ink, the problem is a inked up printer.
I had to buy the service manual to take the printer down to the print mechanism, and clean it as best I can. there is a waste pad there to catch ink, and ink does contaminate the whole area.
Clean this area, as well as you can. Use the Mrs' qtips, or buy the long qtips. Get plenty of alcohol also. The disassembly is not too dificult, but keep an eye on the number and location of screws.
I wish someone just would indicate the problem could be a dirty print mechanism. I admit that I used a few cartridges that I re-filled. This wasn't easy with Canon because the software would not recognize the ink level in the refilled cart.

I wish I could understand how you get this error to go away. I've had this printer for a couple of years and this has never happened.

When I lift the Printer Cover, there is a grey flap that you flip down to get at the ink. That is supposed to be the inner cover. I have this flap up... in the closed position... but continue to get this message.

I wish I understood what you folks meant by a "bar" that has to be pushed up. I can't find any such bar. I reached underneath where this inner cover flap is, and pushed up, but there doesn't seem to be anything there to push up.

I do see some ink splatter down underneath the inner cover...on the inside floor of the unit in the inside right corner. Maybe this is where that sensor one of you were talking about is located? Maybe the sensor is all fouled with ink?

I wonder if it's worth trying to get repaired somewhere or if I should just junk this thing.

Me too! I was worried I'd have to buy a new printer.

Some one should add photos of the thing they reset inside so we all could do this.. service starts at $110 bucks and a new printer is about $250... cheaper to toss if i cant fix myself.. photos please???

I had the same problem. Tried everything I could find on line and nothing. I was ready to replace the printer. I happened to wiggle and reset the paper supply and it started working. Worth a try.

It actually worked ..it was a flap inside the machine (near the ink cartridges) in the 'down position' and is the same color & texture as the outside of the machine. I thought it was a paper feed of some description, I returned it to the "up" position and bingo it worked...Thanks for your help.

I had the same problem, tried the solution, but the message did not go away until I powered off the unit and turned it back on.
