Had a similar problem with the B103F. Not sure it will work for the non F version.
Goto Sony's support site at http://www.sony-asia.com/section/support.
Search model - NWD-B103F (non F is not listed)
Look at the "latest downloads" and select the "firmware update program". (alternately you could first select the "download" section and then select the model.)
Download.
Run (without the unit plugged) and when asked plug the unit. To be on the safe side, ask it also to format the data section.
When finished, the unit should be OK.

Here is the solutuion to Fix faulty NWD-B105---NWD-B103..
Errors and the other fault when you switch the walkman on,says walkman then shuts down..

i went to this sony.com support
http://support.sony-europe.com/dna/wm/wm.aspx?site=odw_en_GB

Type in your walkmans model number,
it will take you to a new page, download the latest firmware, its currently at 1.3,download it to your desktop,or if it gives you the choice to open it straight after download, you can do that,
next..plug your walkman in to you computer, then if you have`nt done it already, start the downloaded sony firmware programme,it will scan for your walkman, when it finds it,"start" will highlighted..make sure you tick the box "format data area" if you dont,it wont work, but before you do,back up any music off your walkman, because this format will erase everything..once it formats, and finishes the firmware update, your walkman shud be functional again..
i had 3 NWD-B103 Walkmans,And a NWD-B105,All of them had the fault, switch it on,displays "walkman" on the screen, then shuts down,i did the above proceedure, and it fixed them all..and all of them work like new again..
Hope This helps..Please reply to this if it works :>)

I'm guessing the problem.
Windows Media Player (XP) says, after downloading files, "you can now disconnect Walkman", yet the the small player screen says "data access do not dissconnect", for perhaps 10 seconds after the media player message.
I think pulling the player from the USB as soon as Media Player says it is OK to do so causes the corruption.

FIXED IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FIXED IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Didthis 3 days ago and it is still working, so I think it is fixed. Thisis what I did. It seems the chip that Sony uses is a Sigmetel 3600. Youhave to download a driver for it. This is where I got it :

http://support.packardbell.com/global/item/index.php?i=7401980000&pi=platform_audiokeyFM&dhepn=C040290000

Nowrun that program. Next, follow these steps. I don't know if the first 2steps are needed , but I did it anyway. Plug your mp3 in USB slot.

1. Run the Sony firmware update - get that from Sony site.

2. Under Windows , format the drive to FAT, not FAT 32
Now comes the tricky part. ( The following is for Vista, Xp should work same way )

3. Remove your mp3 from USB port. It should still be doing what it was doing.

4.Hold down the play button and CONTINUE to hold it down as you insert itin USB port. Keep holding it until you hear the computer beep that itacknowledges it ( if doesn't after 30 sec, probably has - just didn'tbeep ). Release the button.

5. Go into Device Manager. You willsee a folder for Player Recovery Device or STMP3600 ( or somethingsimilar ). Open that folder and right click on the file in that folder( probably called same thing ). Choose Update Driver.

6. Choose Browse My computer for Driver software .

7. Click browse button and go to the following folder:

C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository

8.Find the folder that starts with STMP.. Highlight it and click next. There may be more than one folder with that name, choose the one withthe latest date.

9. You may get a windows error saying it is a dig signed. Accept it anyway.

10. Once updated, remove your mp3.

11.If it doesn't work, run the Sony firmmware update again ( this timewith the format box checked ). If it still doesn't work, try steps 4-10 again.

If you have downloaded the firmware software for your Sony NWD-B103, when you start the software, the software might say, Please Connect Device even if the device is connected to the computer.

What you need to do is to go to the Device Manager, and then select the device icon on the list. Check its properties, go to the Driver tab, and then click on Update Driver. If the wizard asks you to search for the update available for the device using Windows Update, then check No. Not this time. Then click Next. Then check Install from a list or specific location. Then click Next. Then choose Don't search. I will chose the driver to install. Then click Next. Then select USB Mass Storage Device from the list. (First uncheck Show Compatible Hardware if it's checked). Then click Next. Then the wizard installs the appropriate driver. Click Finish when prompted.

Then run the Firmware Software again to see if it works. After you finish click on the device. If Windows asks you to format it, then click on Yes. Format it, and after that, unplug the device from the computer. Never click on the browser after you format it using Windows after you format it using the Firmware Software.

Good luck, and Happy Holidays.

I hav this sony walkman nwd b103 model.. it says boot error and shuts down... i fixed it using firmware1.3.. but it used to have a FM mode.. after the error there is no FM mode.. what do i hav to do to get...

I would check and make sure you got the correct firmware. 'A', 'S' and 'F' on the end of the model is important. If you use a firmware with no FM, you will have no FM.
