The saw is a 385xp. We have changed bars and chains numerous times. When sawing the bar gets hot enough to fry an egg and the chain stretches out. Onlynable to saw a minute or teo at the time. bar gets...

Overheating the chain/bar is usually caused by insufficient oil getting to the chain, but can be caused by the chain being too tight to begin with (you should be able to turn the chain by hand), grit in the chain groove, or a poorly sharpened chain. The saw has an oil volume adjustment screw on the lower part of the case near the chain return area. Turning it CCW should increase oil flow. Oil volume can be judged by running the saw tip at speed near some cardboard for a moment--it should throw off a thin line of oil. Chain sharpening condition can be judged by the sawdust residue coming from the cut--if a powder-like material, the teeth are not sharp or are improperly filed. You should not have to bear down excessively on the saw to make it cut quickly. Hope some of this helps!

Stihl 024 slows down when sawing wood. It picks back up right after I release pressure on saw

How old is the saw? Is the chain on correctly (sharp edge of the chain faces toward you on the bottom) and is it sharp? If none of those the carburetor may need adjustment.

Where can I find a replacement bar and chain for my saw?

Remove the bar and chain from the saw. Take these parts to a saw servicing dealer who can match the bar and chain. Be sure to clean the area where the bar mounts. Run the saw for a few moments--the oil port in the side of the case should ooze out oil. Install the bar first, then thread the chain onto the sprocket, then work it over the bar. Pull the bar out until the chain is fairly tight, then fit the cover, but leave the mounting nut(s) finger tight. Turn the chain adjuster until the chain doesn't droop from the bar, but still be able to turn the chain by hand. Tight the mounting nut(s) and recheck tension. Run the saw at full speed with the tip near some cardboard--it should throw off a thin line of oil onto the cardboard. Hope this helps!

20" poulan chain saw cuts at angle

Hi
You must have hit a nail or stone with the one side of the chain. When the chain gets duller on one side than the other is what makes a saw cut at a angle. Get the chain sharpened and it should cut straight again.

I have a MAC 3516 and need a replacement bar and chain. The original Chain and bar are not available. the saw runs good but need the primer bulb and chain bar and chain. Any ideas would be great.

Hello Eric, You can get an Oregon brand bar and chain that will work perfectly on your Mac 3516. I have this same chainsaw and keep a spare bar and chain, so I can quickly swap them out, should they get damaged, etc.

The Oregon bar and chain part numbers are as follows:

#100457 (Bar & chain combo pack)

You can also find these sold at most Home Depot, Lowe's and other hardware stores that carry chainsaws, as Oregon makes their replacement bar and chains to fit all the major brands available.

Unless your existing bar and chain are completely galled up, scored or bent/busted beyond repair, I would find a small engine repair shop or local hardware store that sharpens chainsaw cutting chains, (True Value and Ace do it in our area) and see if they can sharpen and true up the bar. The price for this is typically about 1/3 to 1/2 the price of a new chain and bar set, and worth having a spare around.

I also like having that extra aleady to use (sharp) chain, so when a neighbor borrows my saw and invariably lets the chainsaw go into the dirt (that'll dull the chain so fast!). I will always be able to use my saw, when I need to, without having to run out and get a replacement, or spend 15 minutes having to sharpen it by hand, etc.

I hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!

My electric chain saw makita 5014 is not cutting seems to burn the wood. Can it need sharpening or a new chain. I am a mere woman and don't know too much.:o)

A dull chain can cause this so can installing it backwards. Find a local chainsaw seller/mechanic about 5 - 10$ to sharpen. Ask for their help to relinstall it. Stihl is the best dealer in my area.
fa94627.gif I have many chains when one dulls easy to swap in sharp one, no emergency to sharpen the dull one. HTH

My chain saw will start and idle fine, however the chain will not spin and if you try to give it gas the engine will begin to smoke like its running hot and stall out

Your chain may simply be too tight or the brake could be on. Pull back on the Kick Back bar in front of the handle and with the saw not running try to rotate the chain by hand. If it will still not rotate losen the bar mounting bolts and turn chain set screw out a little at a time until chain turns. Retighten and recheck chain. The chain should be able to be pinched from the bottom of the bar, but snap back in place and rotate by hand. Caution chain wil be sharp use gloves or heavy cloth when turning. If all this works out and you still have same results, mix up a new batch of gas/oil and drain saw's tank and put in fresh. Should work now hopefully. Also, one other thing to look for when a saw's chain will not turn is debrie jammed into the sprocket area. In which case may have to take chain and bar assembly apart and clean and then reassemble. God Bless

My chain came off. how do I replace

on the side of the saw is a cover usually with one hex nut, take that off and remove the cover. clean out any foreign material you find BUT be careful that the chain might be sharp and make sure the saw is unplugged. then what you want to do is loosen up the adjusting screw located on the front of the saw in the area of the cover a little, roll the chain back onto the bar and sprocket, replace cover and hold up on the tip of the bar with a rag to avoid getting cut snug bar adjustment while lifting the center of chain on top until you can just start to see bottom of teeth, then tighten cover nut, roll chain by hand should roll freely
