You will want to check in Device Manager to see if the device is even detected by the computer. Right Click My Computer, Properties, Click Hardware Tab and Device Manager. If it isn't recognizing the DVD drive then it is most likely bad.

If you have tried more than one commercial DVD and are getting the same results then the problem is the player has failed. Actually what happens is the heads go out of alignment and it doesn't have the accuracy to read the tracks any more. This is a typical failure of dvd players in desktop and laptop computers and standalone players. While the heads can be aligned it isn;t worth doing. It was when a dvd or cd player was $1500 but not now.
Unfortunately the only cost effective fixes are replacing the dvd drive or replacing the entire unit. The replacement dvd would cost more than a new replacement tv/dvd combo. So you can buy a new tv or buy an external player ($40ish).
The most common reason for the Laptop not reading discs is a bad drive. The following website sells the drives and does installs:
store.richspsxparts.com/wiiredvddr
This drive should fix any reading issues you are having with your DVD, or issues inserting your DVD or ejecting them (or lack thereof). This is the entire DVD drive assembly mechanism replacement for your Laptop including a new laser. If your discs are not ejecting, or you cannot insert a disc -- or you can insert a disc but it will not load, this is what you need to get your Laptop going again! Hope this will help...
This has been a major issue with the model laptop. I've had to order a number of these. If you uninstall the device from the device manager including the drivers, then download and install new drivers, remove the dvd drive and reboot the laptop. Shut the laptop down and replace the dvd drive and reboot, let windows find the drive and install the drivers for it and see if that clears up the problem. The main issue with this drive has been the SATA interface, since that is part of the controller card for the drive, the entire drive has had to be replaced. I have found them on Ebay for approx. 45-50 bucks.
There is a screw (tiny machine screw) that holds the entire DVD/CD assembly in place. Usually this screw is located by looking on the bottom of the laptop and has a little picture of a cd embossed in the plastic. Sometimes this screw is under a "lid" such as the cover for the RAM or HDD, depending on how your laptop is engineereed.
Find this screw, unscrew it, set it aside and them pull entire cd/dvd assembly from computer. Replace the cd/dvd drive into the slot you pulled it out firmly and quickly.
Turn on and test reading of CD/DVD.
If love is found, replace screw holding asembly, etc.
If no love, replace CD/DVD drive.

2)update windows ,use custom and see if it finds an updated driver,if it does or doesnt update windows anyhow.
