Hooked up new stereo and now amp wont stay on

  • reujota Apr 16, 2008

i just put a new stereo in my truck, hooked everything everything up and turned it on to adjust the settings on the amp, and it didn't come on. i started messing around with the settings and when i touched the signal sensing switch it turned on for a while and then turned of again. the amp doesn't turn on when i start the truck and when i do get it on it turns off after awhile. the amp is not getting hot and i have already checked all the wiring and connections. i think the problem may be in the signal sensing switch but i don't know what do i do?

I assume the signal sensing switch you are talking about is the remote turn on for the amp. The amp should turn on when you turn your radio on, not your truck.
First try disconnecting the remote turn on that comes from your radio. After that is removed turn your radio on and them run a jumper wire from the positive voltage terminal of the amp ( the main power input) to the remote turn on terminal of the amp. If the amp turns on and you hear music, you have a problem with the remote turn on from the radio. If the amp turns on but you hear no music you have a problem with the audio input of the amp or the wiring of the speakers. if the amp does not turn on you have a problem with the amp.
I think you may have a problem with the remote turn on output of your radio. if so, you need to get the radio looked at by a service technician.
If the amp is turning on sometimes, you may just have a loose wire or faulty ground. Double check all the wiring.

My amp powers on but i get no sound and i have everything hooked up properly, what is wrong with it?

Have you tried your subs on another amp???? Or hook up a small speaker at low volume to the amp and see if it plays....If it doesnt, then the problem lies within your speaker output on your amp or your line out (rcas) on your stereo

I HOOKED EVERYTHING UP CORRECTLY BUT THE AMP WOULD ONLY STAY ON GOR ABOUT 20SECONDS THEN IT WOULD SHUT OFF. AFTER THAT WE TRIED ANOTHER AMP AND THAT ONE WOULDNT SHUT OFF. WHAT WOULD BE THE PROBLEM?

If the amp is a JL 500/1v2, it has a sensing switch which enables it to sense voltage, instead of running a remote wire. If this switch is set to on, and you have a remote turn on wire running to the amp........this can happen. I own one of these, and made that mistake myself.

Installin car systems

you dont want to connect both of those amplifiers together. You could run them separately to separate subs or the jl to your sub and your alpine to your front speakers. But you dont ever want to mix and match amps to the same sub. Even if you had 2 jl500/1's you wouldnt want to just hook them up together. Because they both have to be putting out the exact same amount of power. Which no 2 amps are ever exactly the same. Some companies make bridges to properly connect 2 exact amps together. I Hooked up 2 JL 1000/1's to each voice coil on a 13.5 W7 and i smoked the sub. So i definitely dont reccommend doing it unless the amps are conneccted to separate things.

Jl audio 500/1 amp low ohm light at high volume

I would try running the subs in parallel. Pos to Pos Dual Voice, Neg to Neg Dual Voice. Then Run + to + stereo - to - stereo on both channels.
So you have + and - running to one channel and + and - running to the other channel.
Also your LPF filter could be set too high.

Jl audio 500/1 amp

You may have the amp set to turn on via an audio signal. Set the Signal Sensing switch to OFF.

Jl Audio 500/1 Car Audio

There are no fuses inside the amp.

Are any of the lights lighting up on the amp?

If so, which ones?

Low ohm light on my jl 500/1

If the low impedance light is on, the amp probably has shorted output transistors. If you don't know of a good local repair shop, call 'several' of the local audio sales/installation shops to see who they use. If more than one audio shop recommends the same repair shop, they probably do good work.

My JL subs just dont beat like the ONES IVE HAD before as well as the ones my friends have had

sounds like they have your sub amp in mono but they put the speakers in series which totally cancels the benefit of running your amp in mono. you will probably be happier if you just hook the left speaker to left plus and minus and the right to right plus and minus. Cuz even though subs aren't directional they do pass some higher frequencies that are and that dilutes the stereo effect.
