Turned it on and after an hour I heard a sizzle and then a small black puff of smoke came out the back at the top right. I still get sound but the picture only comes on for less than a second and then the screen goes blank and I can still hear the audio.

Sounds like the backlight or power supply for it failed. If the unit is out of warranty, try and open up the back and have a look for the area that burned up. Make sure it is unplugged. Damage to the power supply? or the inverter board? or the backlight panel itself?

2010 Chevy silverado starts hard and puffs smoke when cold

Black smoke is too much fuel. My guess would be that there is an injector that is stuck open draining the pressurized fuel into a cylinder or several cylinders. And that is a considerable amount of fuel. And it would account for the hard start because there isn't any fuel being pumped into the other injectors until the pump builds the pressure back up.

I hope you unplugged your unit or tripped the breaker. If they are bright red then you have an electrical short that should have tripped the breaker a long time before they turned red hot.

Most likely the water from defrost was sizzling and your defrost heater has burned out. The unit won't defrost and your heater assembly needs to be replaced if that's what happened

Neon won't start

Hate to say it but you have to start tracking wires... Start from your battery and go from there. Sounds like a possible fusable link that blew but the only way to tell is checking for power from battery cables. keep me informed.
