Hi!
I'm not sure if you're still in need of a solution but I'm currently going through the same issue. My Kindle 2 has not connected to Whispernet for over a week. I've been back and forth with Customer Service (1-866-321-8851 or 1-206-266-0927 if you're calling from outside the U.S) and after an exhaustive search for any possible answer, they told me it was a network connectivity issue and forwarded a service note to AT&T/Sprint, and promised to notify me as soon as possible. I'm still waiting to hear from them. Yesterday my Kindle connected to Whispernet for all of three minutes (just long enough to download a book I bought over a week ago) and now nothing. I've even tried switching wireless networks in range (go to settings, hit menu, type 311 - select different wireless networks) but to no avail. So basically, the best thing you can do after you have tried a soft/hard reset, a fully charged battery and toggling wireless off and on is to call tech support. Do you happen to be in Orange County, New York? If you are, maybe it's a malfunctioning cell tower.
Hope this helps!

If your Kindle is not able to connect with the 3G area, take the help of the Kindle experts. Contact Kindle Help Number +1-800-214-4506 and get assistance with your issue.
The Kindle
automatically searches for the best connection signal in the area
you're in. But for that, you first need to check if the wireless mode
is turned on.
If you can
see the signal strength bars next to the battery icon at the top, it
is on. If close to the battery icon you only see another icon marked
OFF, then you need to change that, as follows:
Press
MENU,
Move the
5-way controller button up, till the selecting bar is under "Turn
Wireless On" and press it once.
The Kindle
will start to look for the providers in the area. The kind of
connection it is connected to will be shown next to the battery icon
and can be 3G, 2G, GPRS, EDGE and 1X.
But to see this information, you need to press the MENU
button, because it is not shown in the normal view.
That icon
at the top indicates the connection that was established by your
device.
Another
way to check the connection you have is via the settings display, in
an undocumented feature. Here, a note of caution: THIS IS A FEATURE
NOT DOCUMENTED IN THE KINDLE MANUAL AND YOU WILL BE USING IT AT YOUR
SOLELY DISCRETION. IF YOU SELECT A NETWORK THAT DOES NOT PROVIDE THE
RIGHT SERVICE, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CONNECT YOUR DEVICE - YOU
SHOULD BETTER LET THE AUTOMATIC SELECTION MODE ON.
If you
still want to proceed, you need to press MENU, select Settings
and, when the Settings screen is displayed, press type 311.
A warning
note indicating that the connection will be lost momentarily and that
you may not successfully reconnect to the Amazon Whispernet networks
appears. Selecting OK in this panel will take you to the "Available
Wireless Providers" screen and the Kindle will take a while to scan
all the networks available in your area.
A list of
the networks found will be displayed. You can move the cursor and
select the one you want, pressing the 5-way controller button. But it
is better to select the "Switch automatically" option and let the
best option be selected by the Kindle.
I hope
these tips can help you solve your problem. Good luck!
