You need to make sure you have the correct codec for playing dvds, google free codecs and you will get a wide choice to download and install, I recomend a codec pack as these have all the latest codecs from flash to hcc's

Try updating the driver using the software from the following site:

http://www.drivereasy.com/

Follow the instructions and update the driver.

It is doesn't work, remove the driver from Device Manager and reboot.

Sony viao laptop speakers are garbled when playing a dvd, but ok when playing a cd.

I have seen that problem and Sony VIAO Notebook usually face that problem.It's manufacturer defect.

You can buy an External Soundcard and use that.It will give you more higher quality than the inbuilt one.
