This is a belt driven transmission. from the engine driven pulley going aft towards the xmission differential there is another smaller variable speed pulley, there is a long belt between these two, from the variable speed pulley there is a larger xmission pulley that sits kitty-corner to it with a belt between these two. This larger "xmission pulley" is what drives the differential and depending upon which gear you have selected, makes it go forward or reverse. Check that both belts between pulleys are on, check that pulley's hardware is completely secured (nuts tightened down) The heads of these pulley's are splined to align to the shaft(s) and if they aren't tight, they will just spin and not engage the transmission. If your battery is under the seat, remove it and you should be able to see and access the aft pulleys. If both belts are on and engaging the pulley's and the shaft is turning on the transmission pulley than you have transmission differential failure. Bet it's the belt off or pulley head loose. Good luck, hope this helps

unfortunately you are now faced with choosing whether it is economically worth it to replace the drive unit (differential). Having it rebuilt will cost you as much as buying a new one (around $350). Replacing it shouldn't be too difficult, pretty much should bolt on, but how old is your mower, what else is worn and ready to break? If it is still in good shape I would replace the differential. Here is a link for a business that sells riding mower parts that I have used several times in the past. Just look up your model # and tab through the parts lists. Nice illustrated parts break down here: http://www.superxpower.com/pages/customp...

I have an MTD mower tha tis ver jerky in forward, reverse is fine. What could it be? The trans is about 2 years old. I thisnk it could be the clutch plate or the differentital, however, reverse works fine...

Assuming that the model you have is a single speed transmission with variable speed belt system and that the mower has never been used to tow anything heavier than a dump cart. 9 times out of 10 its usually the forward gear shift key not allowing it to go all the way into forward gear. Might be able to ajd the shift linkage to acomodate a tighter mesh with the input and ring gear

John deere x340 wont move

there is a release usually behind the seat that has to be pulled in order to push it physically. make sure that the release is pushed in for the forward/reverse to work.

Stalls when engage blades in forward, but cuts fine in reverse

Did you try to disengage the safety feature that should shut the tractor off when the blades are engaged and the tractor is placed in reverse? I believe that it is located under the shift leaver
