The inside door handles are plastic so the chances are you need a new one. To get to it you have to take the door panel off and than you will see

1997 Geo Metro rear door won't open!

I have the same car, same problem. I've still not been able to fix it, despite taking the inside panels off the rear doors, checking the rods were seated, applying WD-40 to the lock mechanisms, and manually working the mechanism. Child locks are not engaged, but I tried putting them on and off too. Just won't open.

I cannot open rear driver side door from inside or out. what is broken and how do I fix? 1998 Mercury Mountaineer

Well you could take the door panel off and fool around with the lock till you get it to work. If you want to get lazy take a crow bar and open the door with that, but it will more than likely break the door. Sounds the lock seized up and will take you working to get it loose,
