There are some things you should do on your own:
1) Gather information. You need to know your Gateway model and S/N, Windows version (XP, Vista, 7, 32bit or 64bit)
To check windows version: Right-click My Computer or Computer from Start menu, choose properties. You should be able to see the Windows version here
2) Go to Gateway website:
http://support.gateway.com/support/default.aspx?cmpid=topnav_support
Click on the "Notebooks" tab and input your S/N.
3) Scroll down to "Touchpad Drivers" section and download the latest driver for your model. Be sure to save the file where you can find it.
4) Install the new driver. It may be helpful to uninstall the old driver first: Start>>Right-click (My)Computer >> Manage >> In left pane, Device Manager >> In Right Pane, click plus sign next to, Mice and Other pointing devices >> Right -click the touchpad and click Uninstall, be sure to check the box, "Remove Software".
See if this gets better. If not, the touchpad/Palm rest needs to be replaced, but getting Gateway to do it (sounds like they tried) may be tough.
At least if you install the new driver, you may be able to disable it permanently, and then use a wireless mouse (which usually is much nicer anyway).
Happy computing!
Thank you for responding. There is no button right above the keypad to lock/ unlock as we have on our Compaq laptop. The one with the problem today is a new Gateway laptop and the sticker on the bottom states the model number is MS2285. Does that mean anything to you?? I appreciate any advice you can offer.
OH!!!! Problem solved!! It turns out that the light at the top of the keyboard which indicated the touchpad was off is also a button in disguise. Touch the light and it turns off. Touchpad is working again!! Thanks for coming to my rescue. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. :)
There should be a button right on your laptop to unlock the mouse. Most laptops have that function. If you could say the model of your laptop, I could help more or come up with a better answer because laptops have different functions on different keys.
