My cell phone broke so i activated by brothers old phone,which had a password lock on but he can't remember the password for the phone,so now the phone works i just can't use it because of the password lock is there anyway to unlock the phone without paying the carrier?

The gmail that is asking for is the one you use to activate the phone, also the password is needed. If you forgot your gmail account username, then use a computer to troubleshoot the problem by clicking Forgot password, and then I can't get into my account or something along those lines. It will take you to a process of some questions. Remember, it have to be the one you use to activate the phone.
To change your lock screen password (assuming you still remember the old one) go to the Settings app, then go to GeneralPasscode LockIt will then ask for you old password, enter itthen click onChange PasscodeType in your old one againtype in your new onethen type in your new one again.Now your Lock screen password is changed.
The only way out is to get the firmware reinstalled. People may say very many things about using the IMEI number etc, but let me assure you the nothing works except reinstalling the firmware or asking your brother for the password. Take a choice. Get it reinstalled from the service center of your phone make. Yes, you would lose all data on the phone. It would come out as brand new.

You can activate this feature from Tools | Settings | Security | Phone and SIM | Allow remote lock menu. The password of your memory card will be your remote lock message. So, if you still remember your remote lock message, then try to unlock your memory card’s password using that message.
