MTD Series 410 rear tine tiller. Bought 2007. Used 5 times. 6th time (today) was working and suddenly tines disengaged and will no longer engage. Forward and reverse drive still function fine. Sheer pins are ok. Linkage ok. Shifting into ''T'' (forward drive with tines engaged) has always been a little stiff, now just flops into position without any resistance. Paid $799.99 in 2007. MTD parts wants $594 for the complete gearbox assembly (might as well get myself new one if going to pay this amount). I really would like to just fix it myself but don't know where to get service manual. Have operators manual. Don't know how to remove the shaft seals (without damaging them) or the large pulley.
I had the same problem. After splitting the case, I found that the shifting fork was bent and the pins that move the shift collar were worn. I made new pins for and reinforced the shifting fork, put it back together and if worked for a few minutes until it would jump out of gear while tilling. I would try to hold the external shifting rod down so that it would not jump out of gear but eventually it quit working completely. I tore it down again and the pins were already work out. I ordered a new detent ball and spring for less than $10 including shipping. This seems to have cured the problem. Apparently the detent spring was weak which allowed the shifting collar to disengage from the drive gear when under load. The original spring had been replaced with a new part number so it may have been made stronger. Tearing one apart is not easy but is certainly doable. To make it easier, put the nuts back on the bolts from where they came. Also get the parts manual picture to help with reassembly. Be careful with the case gasket. It costs a ton for a new one but since the grease is so thick, you could probably silicone it back together if you destroy the gasket.
As much as I hate to admit it, I have one in my shop I have been working on for a friend. Like ehertig_cwc shows in his picture of the shifter forks they can and do bend. The part i hate to admit is I have been unable to fix this one. Yeah, the shifter forks were bent and the pins worn to nothing. I repaired that and put it back together and I'm sure some of you how long that takes. It worked for about 20 minutes and I lost all shift detents. I have studied and studied that drive shaft shifter section and for the life of me I have been unable to determine what keeps the dang detent ball from rotating and getting into the shafts keyed section. As soon as it does, you loose or soon will loose shifting as the clutch just floats around in there. I have two MTD service manuals and neither on shows this drive shaft apart or how to assemble it. I think it is magic how it works. Other than this part I find the gearbox pretty easy to work on.
Greetings all owners of the MTD 410 rear tine tiller !
I also have one of these and so far mine has not run into trouble but a customer brought me one just the other day. Customer said " The rear tines will only work if i push the shift lever down and hold it while i till." Well i started the breakdown all the way to the case. SANDPAPERED /EMORY CLOTHED the 2 shafts 1 wheel shaft and 1 tine shaft, `1 left the right hand wheel and tine on (engine removed) ( VERY IMPORTANT TO DO THIS) you wont be cursing trying to get it apart or back together. after pulling apart the left hand side case I inspected and removed the shift fork and noticed the 2 fingers on the shift fork were worn down from the customer holding it in the till position. cost 65 bucks, also the 2 shaft keys were slightly worn on the ends. these 2 spline keys are what engage into the tilling sprocket, replaced both of them 12 bucks,..also the 17 tooth spur tiller gear was worn at the center where these 2 spines intersect for tilling 14 bucks ( you could actually flip it and it will work like anew one). I put it all back together and carefully inspected everything. Its a little tricky getting that spring/ detent ball back into place. i had to use a small flat screwdriver to push the detent ball back into the spring to get the shaft to slide onto the shaft correctly. Now i got just one problem the gear selection indicates R N F T ...but after my reassembly ...my selections are N R F T. reverse and neutral are backwards..i have taken it apart 4 times.....and im sure its in that shifter slide assembly.just cant figure out where....you can find a good breakdown diagram in parts tree .com but not a good view of that shifter assembly...take PICS ! of shifter assembly and tear apart if i would of done this i wouldnt be having my problem...good luck everyone.
Trying to stay calm and remind myself it only makes my blood pressure go up.
I decided to take the transmission part of my tiller to a "shop" to have them put in shifting fork and detent spring foote, if needed. Well, I got it back from them Friday, and put the tiller back together today, (about 4 hours of work). The transmission lasted all of about 5 minutes in the garden. It kept jumping out of gear when I engaged the tines. So I tried to hold it in gear. (bad idea) it got stuck like that. This is some real garbage-,! Of course they didn\'t think It needed the dentent spring, I\'m pretty sure it did at this point.
Now I\'m going to have to tear it down again and hope the $70 part I bought and had them put in, isn\'t f-d up.
I have to wait till Monday to take it back up there when they open. I was hoping to get some tilling done this weekend. Guess that aint happening. Why cant i find competent people who actually earn their money?
The funny thing is, According to the MTD website. The shop I took my tiller trany too , to have them fix it, is an "Service Center" for my Yard Machine.

So since i got this tiller i been rebuilden gear box got it all back together other then the clutch shaft asssembily cant find no scimatic of clutch shaft ... i need to find out withc way those 45 pins go on the shaft in order to put the cover back onbut if any1 can help me email me @ [email protected] thank u very much
I have this problem, too. the tines won't engage. wife was tilling and the tines just stopped. manual doesn't have troubleshooting instructions.
The clutch keys jump out of the spur gear usually because the driveshaft moves in and out of the case about .030 in. This wears the clutch keys and spur gear and you usually destroy the shift fork trying to get it to work. After close examination I found the cause and came up with a solution
I have detailed photos of the problem and instructions on how to fix this. Since there is no place here to post this info you can e-mail me at [email protected] and I will send it all to you along with my phone number.
