'unknown disc error' problem on LG VHS-DVD combos and DVD burners

Refering to the 'unknown disc error' problem on ALL LG DVD reader/recorders, can anyone confirm this:

Assuming that:
- An LG DVD reader/recorder 'remembers' the position the last DVD read, was at, when the machine was stopped/switched off, to continue there next time it is switched on.

- A problem occurs after/during or while burning onto a RW-DVD: You remove the DVD and switch off the unit.

- What does the machine remember?

- It WILL say 'unknown disc, please check disk again' next time you will try and play ANY other burned or purchased DVD.

LG's DVD burners all seem to have a software problem linked to illogical thinking of the software programmer.

No one at LG knows how to 'reset' a unit, i.e. to get the unit to 'forget' a faulty burn... which is the origin of the 'unknown disc' error. Logically to the machine, any other DVD put in AFTER a burning problem is an 'unknown disc'...

How do I record a vhs onto a dvd on the combo?

I have researched the manual for this particular device and you will not be able to convert/record VHS tapes to DVD discs. You can however record content from a DVD to VHS tape as this model only has a readable disc player not a DVD burner. Sorry, but you may want to research DVD recorders that also have VHS playback.

How do you record dvd to vhs and from vhs to dvd

For VHS to DVD, put the tape to dub in the VHS slot and a blank DVD in the DVD tray. Make sure the DVD is compatible with the DVD recorder (see the recommended disc list) and is unfinalized if you are using a R/W disc. Close the tray. Set the unit to VCR mode with the DVD/VCR button. Advance the tape to the place that you want the recording to start. Then press the Dubbing button (either on the remote or the unit itself). Select the recording mode (SP, LP etc), highlight Dubbing then press Enter or Dubbing. Press Stop to interrupt the recording.

For DVD to VHS, put a blank tape in the VCR (make sure the protection tab has not been broken off) and the DVD to duplicate in the DVD tray and close the tray. Put the unit in DVD mode by pressing the DVD/VCR button. Find the point at which you want to start recording the DVD. Again press Dubbing and set up the recording mode and highlight Dubbing and press Enter or Dubbing.

Note that copyprotected content can not be recorded.

The manual for this recorder is on the right side of the page here: http://www.lg.com/us/tv-audio-video/video/LG-dvd-recorder-RC897T.jsp . See page 48 for the screen captures of setting the recording mode part of the dubbing procedure.

I hope this helps.

After warranty time expires (2yearsd) my LG LRY-517 DVD combo recorder/player start to make randomly disc reading errors. During half year things has going worse. Now the situation is that it does not play...

Use lens cleaner disk to run many times. It cleans the lens and also runs cd on the disk which eventually will get rid of moisture on the circuits and restore your dvd recorder on the LG unit.

Cannot format a dvd-rw disc or record to the disc.

Unless you posted this question in the wrong category, you can't use the Sansui VRDVD4000 to record to DVD. It is a DVD player only, not a DVD burner. It will play and record VHS tapes, but with DVDs it will only play them.

To record to a DVD, you would need a DVD burner. Many modern computers include a DVD burner, so maybe either your computer or someone you know's computer has a DVD burner.

HOW DO I RECORD A DVD TO A VHS ON A VHS DVD COMBO BY PHILIPS

Cannot do this on a combo unit. There is a chip that senses copy protection and prevents recording a copy-protected DVD to a VHS and vice-versa. Solution: Use an outboard DVD player or an outboard VHS VCR and try the recording with the video routed through a "stabilizer" box. The stabilizer (about $30 or less on Ebay) defeats the copy protection on MOST DVDs, but not all. It works with Netflix DVDs. Route the audio as usual. Audio is not protected.
