The problem lies in the housing for the laser that sensors whether the ice tub is installed. My temporary fix was to use clear packing tape over the sensor door (making sure the temperature of the area to be taped is warm enough to not condensate water before the tape is applied)
There may be a small leak in the pipe at the place of joint which lets small amount of water out and it may be this water that freezes. Have a check of that tube and if necessary get it replaced.

The flap that the ice comes thru on the door , is not closing completely . This will let warm air inside the shoot AND inside the ice bin where the ice comes out . Open the freezer door and use a flask light on the outside and look for light thru the black flap to verify .
Thanks very much for the reply - you are absolutely correct! One of the plastic brackets holding the flap hinge shaft was broken. Since I posted this I found out that this is not an uncommon issue with these refrigerators and that there is a special kit to fix - Whirlpool part # 8201756. Cost me about $90, but cheaper online. I installed it myself in about an hour and it works perfectly now, but this isn't the first problem with this refrigerator. I'm no longer a fan.
I have a side by side kitchenaid superba. It seems the freezer no longer self defrosts as there is a build up of ice on the bottom. This is the second time this has happened. Also everything in the crisper drawer in the refrigerator freezes.
