Compaq MP2800 Lamp powers down after a few seconds

The unit powers up fine and displays a good crisp image, but shuts down within 45 seconds even though both fans are running. I noticed that the Lamp fan came on just as the Lamp began to heat up and stayed on even after the Lamp shut off.

    Have exactly the same problem!

Have the exact same problem, guess I will start at looking to replace the fan...

  • fabbraun May 31, 2008

    I'm having a similar problem:

Device powers up and i get a good image.
    Device fan starts immediately.
Lamp fan starts after about 15 seconds.
After about 1 minute the device powers off (device fan stops, but lamp fan keeps on blowing for some seconds).

Something strange: In standby mode the device produces a quiet clicking-noise.
Did someone of you encounter this problem too?

As a future electrical engineer I already did some measurements (oscilloscope, voltage-meter, ...).
It seems that Ballast is having a problem. It's PFC (Power Factor Controller) which converts the rectified 230Volts (Swiss voltage :-)) to 400VDC has a huge ripple voltage (about 50Volts Peak-To-Peak). The frequency of this ripple is exactly the same as the strange clicking-noise.

For better reparing this ballast I'd be glad having a Schematic of this.
Does someone know where to get this?
Actually it wouldn't be so motivating drawing the schematic (by reverse engineering) because it's multi layer (at least 3 layers) board. :-(

I know there'd also be the possibility to just replace the part. But 150$ (ebay ;-)) for a Ballast seems quite expensive to me - as a student.
Does somene know a better ressource where to get a ballast?

    Thanks in advance!
    Fab

Exactly the same thing hapening to my mp2800 as wayne's. I have only loged 590 hours on the lamp so it should not be that causing the shut down. Kept it very clean over the years so it should not be due to dust or muisture. tryed runing it without the bolb in and it still shut down so ??????

I agree with fabbraun... It seems plausible that the ripple in voltage is causing the projector to think there is a minor power surge, thus shutting it down as soon as it has self tested...
I would love to know where I can get a replacement ballast!

Hi Wayne

It is normal for the lamp's fan to start running , but should actually happen within 15 seconds of starting up. Try changing the lamp's fan and if the problem still persists then you will have to replace the Ballast ( lamp's powersupply )

Turns itsel of after a few seconds

Not the lamp - if it were the lamp it would never turn on in the first place! Check for a defective component in the power supply area especially the capacitors. When their value changes, they are responsible for all kinds of erratic behavior. Items will not turn on, shut down after a few seconds, etc.

If the projector is not getting a source it might go on standby maybe check where you plug it in.
Projectors require quite a bit of power and should be on a single loop/outlet not hooked up to a powerbar with more things on it.

Hope that helped.

Viewsonic PJ556d shuts down after 30-60 seconds

My solution sounds dumb, I had the same issue. Took the lamp cover off the bottom. The screws were loose holding in the lamp. Maybe they heat and expand and eventually work their way out and the lamp doesn't make good contact. Just tightened mine up, the unit would power off after 45 minutes prior. Been on now for 5 hours, no trouble.

Compaq iPAQ MP2810 Multimedia Projector

hi all... i have this projector and it boosts up flashes the blue screen and sometimes the projected image too. then goes to standby mode.

I have managed to keep it going enough to see the problem for myself. Here is what i did.. lye the projector on its left side while a cool blower blows through the left side of the lamp housing. fire it up and it will stay on. I went to the menu and did a factory reset as well as lamp hours reset. checked the lamp hours and it was at zero. so its never going to stay on for long for one reason.

As the lamps get older the emit more heat and therefore cause the unit to shutdown. so if you want it to work your going to have to order that lamp. The cheapest i found is from austrailia link off ebay below.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/COMPAQ-HP-MP2800-MP2810-MP-2800-MP-2810-Lamp-L1552A_W0QQitemZ280387113761QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item41485fd321&_trksid=p3286.m63.l1177

last link is for the manual found in this forum but not clear on how to get it.

Hope you get a good result bulb on order.
