You are doing nothing wrong.
That code means your print head is not moving into position properly, AKA to slow in pivoting back and forward.
Here are the problems in order of likelyhood.
1. The print head pivot block. When, from the front, you take the left side cover off, about half way back on the lower part of the frame there is a stainless steel block, about 1 inch by one inch square. Most of the time what happens is some ink has seeped into that block and the pivoting of the print head is very slow. What you want to do is remove the spring assembly over that block. It just pulls back and you latch it up and to the left. Remove that block and soak it in very hot water. That softens the contaminating ink for easier removal. Clean the block thoroughly and as best you can pick out the remaining ink surrounding it in the frame of the machine. Lightly lubricate the block with a silicon of very highly refidned oil. I stress lightly.
2. The cleaning blade has stuck to the print head. That normally is caused by not powering down the printer properly or a power failure shutting it down. For that, you have to remove the right and left side covers, and the ink loader,( where you put the ink sticks). That is just held in with pressure tabs. Remove the ink loader then look between the drum and print head, if the wiper is stuck there, gently pry it loose from the print head, and run 2 or 3 cleaning cycles.
3. While you would have the ink loader out, if the wiper isnt stuck, make sure one of the cables to the print head are not holding it back.
One of those 3 will resolve the problem. It is caused by the print head not being able to move freely.

I work at a community college, and appears that at least 4 of the phaser 8400s are having trouble with their print heads. Thank you for giving a something to try to fix this problem.

We have a Xerox Phaser 8400. It is currently showing an error message as follows : 37,016.43:574548 can you please advise us as to what the problem is. Thanks

According to the Xerox support website, your printer needs to be serviced by a support technician. Here is a link to the support page.

Copied from another forum:
37,016.4x - PEST_FAULT_HM_CLUTCH_DISCONNECT
PEST - Head maintenance clutch disconnect. The head maintenance clutch is not drawing the expected power from the supply.
1. Run the Head Maintenance Clutch test.
2. Check the Head Maintenance Clutch wiring.
3. Disconnect the Wave Amp signal cable from the left
side of the Electronics Module. If the error code changes, replace the Wave Amp.
4. Replace the head maintenance clutch.

Unless you are skilled at printer repair, it looks like your best course of action is to call a service tech.

Phaser 8400 Error Code 07.009.42:265696

Hi carlt322:
Here is your problem.

7,009.4x: PM_FAULT_HEADTILT_PARK_ ERROR
The printhead is tilted back but not in the park arms and restrained properly. This is due
to the wiper assembly not moving up far enough for the park arms to hold it.
1. Check the printhead heater wiring.
2. Check for an obstruction or damage in the process
gearbox. Ensure the gears are correctly aligned and
homed, see page 6-8. If faulty replace the process
gearbox assembly.
3. Run the Head Maintenance Clutch test, if it fails replace
the clutch.
4. Run the Wiper Drive test. If the test fails, inspect the
maintenance drive system.
5. Replace the exit assembly.

Hope this helps

Xerox Phaser 8400 Error code 07,010.43:47560 how to fix any instructions. regards maciek

I looked everywhere for a solution for error 07,010.43:168130 and found that most everyone recommended I take it to a pro for errors starting in 07,010.43. However, before I resorted to that I cleared out the ink tray and replaced the maintenance kit, turned it off and then back on and it miraculously worked. A lot of ink had piled on the ink tray but the sensor did not alert me that it needed to be emptied.

So...I don't know how you're really supposed to fix that problem but the ink & maintenance kit thing worked for me!

Xerox Phaser 8400 error code 37,004.40:27697

The majority of the time that code means the print head has failed.
That is a print head heater error.
You can find some places that sell print heads for about $150 , you would have to google the model number for that.
Xerox would charge $750 for a new print head, uninstalled.
