Nikon d40 digital camera

My camera is about a year old nikon d40 digital. For some reason it just stopped working when it is in auto focus mode. Nothing happens when I push the shutter button. IN manual mode it will work. Any ideas?

I have the exact same problem - my 5 month old Nikon D40 suddenly stopped taking pictures in the automatic mode, but will take them in the manual mode. Please help!

I am having the same problem. And it's not the focus on the picture or the darkness of the room because my flash still pops up. How did anyone fix theirs?

My issue is very similar. I took a bunch of photos this past saturday (4/19/08) uploaded them that night, and then the following morning I went to take a picture in the house, all lights were on mind you, and the AF was having a hard time adjusting. I switched to manual and it worked fine. So I assume the camera itself is fine, but AF mode is being really odd.

I am thinking that is a problem with most of the D40s as I m having the same problem. Anyone hear from Nikon abotu a fix? has anyone taken it to someone to get repaired and if so how much did it cost?

As for others, the AF suddenly stopped working and the camera will take pictures only in manual mode.

When the camera is in auto focus mode, it will not take the picture until it locks onto a subject. If there is not enough light, the camera will "hunt" for something to focus on. Since it can't define any edges, it won't allow the shutter to release.

The D40 base model does NOT have a powered focus lever for autofocus, so if the autofocus is not working, suspect the lens.

I would check to see if the lenses work on another Nikon digital camera.Double check the A/M mode switch on both. Does it feels solid or mushy when you flip it back and forth?

I will say that both lenses use the same auto-focus gear assembly which can fail over time. Nikon only sells the assembly as a unit, so even if one of the small gears is broken or damaged, the whole thing gets replaced. You cab send them to Nikon or a trip your local camera store may be in order.

My Nikon D40 doesn't focus not take pics

If it's under warranty, use the warranty. It takes my D40x about a half second to focus at most. I keep my camera in a dust proof case when not in use. I've had it for 2 years, it still works fine.

The G series lenses won't work in AF mode on the newer, entry-level Nikons. They require the DX series.

Nikon D40 help?!

I assume the lens had the impact. The 18-55 lens has the built-in motors for auto-focus.
Try switching to manual focus (on the lens). If this works, the lens may not auto-focus anymore.
Try it and let me know.
cheers,
