Hi
Got this laptop in 2005 and after watching few movies, I cant play DVD anymore. Nothing happens when I try to play a dvd. Its Intervideo Inc. windvd. Audio CDs work fine.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
The Vaio / Sony combo DVD drives are renowned to be some of the worst on the market. Sony puts the cheapest cr*p in their laptop and it should be no surprise that after a couple of reads (10+) and writes (10+), your combo drive will be as good as junk... dead weight in your laptop. You'll also hear strange repetitive noises coming from it. I have 3 solutions:
1) Go to the Vaio support site, type your model number to get its page and search DVD upgrade firmware. This should 2 files. One is a .bin and the other is an executable to flash the drive with that .bin file. If the problem still persists then bad news.
2) Buy a USB2 external combo drive. This should be real cheap nowadays.
3) Check impactcomputers for a replacement internal drive. Prices have come down but still quite pricey.
Also if you can let those f*cks at Vaio know what you had to go through, that'd be great.
I don't think it's an issue with the software (WinDVD), but try putting a DVD Movie in and then check in My Computer and see if the DVD drive now shows the DVD's label name. If not, then it's likely to be a hardware issue.
The only thing I can suggest is to clean the laser lens with a cleaning disc.
Hope that helps...

It may possibly be your dvd decoder! its digital copyright Protection! you may need to either update the one you have or buy a new one! good luck
Make sure RealPlayer is installed and working. WinDVD won't work right without it.
Can't play DVD with my IBM R 51 lap top which came with Windows XP proffessional as and Inter Video Win DVD 5 platinum as OEM. Looks like one of the dll files in the program has got currupted.
Pls help with solution short of reformating.
Thanks

same problem
I own a sony Viao since 2005 and when I place DVD it doesnt play them only the audio CD's.
I have a Vaio VGN-A790 and I can only play certain dvds.
HP A430n with Ricoh MP5240A DVD+RW - similar problem to the others. I can play CD's, but DVD's do not work. They are not recognized in Windows Explorer either.
i have the same problem, except the opposite... So, when I put my audio cd in, which I bought genuinely from a shop.. Nothing happens, it doesn't play and auto run doesn't start up.. At first, I thought it was just windows media player, but when I went to computer, it says no disc is in the drive.. I know it hasn't happened from the beginning because i've ripped cd's onto my laptop before, but now it just won't work.. DVD's work fine for me. please please help! real desperate! thanks.. btw, I have a CR vaio laptop.
I have never tried playing a dvd in my VGN TZ notebook, until today. It won`t play even though I can play cd`s. I have tried another dvd with the same result. The dvd/cd drive on my computer tells me to insert a disc. I hae checked and the dvd driver (matshita UJ 852S )is up to date. Frustrating and I am glad this is my notebook nd not main computer
