I put in a load to wash it appears to be washing and when I come back in to check it says 5d what does this mean?
Thanks, wilbur 24 for the input.
If this is a Suds error, then you will need to run the washer on a Rinse & Spin cycle with no detergent added to get rid of any excess soap. NOTE: You may have to repeat this cycle several times in order to clear the error.
Are you currently using HE detergent? If not, it is strongly recommended that you do. HE rated washers are supposed to use HE detergents because they are formulated for wash tubs that only use 5-7 gallons of water (like yours). If you use regular detergents you are, in affect, adding a higher concentration of soap that is formulated for wash tubs that have a 35 gallon capacity. This can cause damage to the tub and pump seals. Most manufacturers now have a disclaimer that states that the warranty becomes null and void if it is doscovered that you have used the wrong detergent.
In addition, some HE detergents are DOUBLE-CONCENTRATED, which means you only use HALF the amount you normally use. Make sure you read the label carefully to ensure you aren't inadvertently adding too much detergent.
Some other things that can cause over-sudsing include washing too little clothing with too much soap and soft water. Its best to wash full loads with front loaders as they are rated for large capacities. Cut back on the amount of detergent when washing smaller loads. Soft water can make detergents work better and create excessive suds. Try using less detergent.
I hope I don't insult your intelligence. I'm just trying to give you some sound advice in the event that you are not aware of some of the common causes of this problem. I hope this helps you.
I am having the same problem with my washer. It says 5d, there is no space in between for a "U" (suds). My washer also takes an hour and a half to wash a regular load of laundry. It just started doing this. We purchased our washer and dryer about 10 months ago. Never had a problem before this.
There is a 5d its a suds lock overdose of detergent detected during the wash cycle

Thanks for your help
I had an error 5d today. using He detergent and no it does not say suds.
washer says f21, then 5d, is empty now, starts to add water then stops, we have unplugged ect...
Are you sure the error code is "5d"? Or, could it be "Sud"? The reason I ask, is that I cannot find a "5d" error code for a Whirlpool Duet.
